I tried going speed limit both ways on my trip (100kph) on the 401 and almost got killed a hundred times over and got 34mpg. I then got fed up and went 140kph the all the way on another tank and got 32mpg. 2mpg difference from 40kph increase in speed ...

The sweet spot is around 88km/h. That's what speed they're going when they do the testing for the "Highway" value. You're never going to be able to travel at those speeds safely on a 400-series highway.
