Honda Fit to be built in the USA by 2008?

This story may confirm it:

Honda to build assembly plant in Indiana
Ashley M. Heher
Associated Press via Yahoo!
June 28, 2006

(Read http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060628/ap_on_bi_ge/honda_plant_5 for the full article)

It it very likely that the new plant--which will come online in 2008--will build the second-generation Honda Fit as its first model. :) I also expect the plant to build Honda Civic models due to its "flexible production" design.

One of the selling point for the Fit for me is that it's one of only two Honda's
made and assembled entirely in Japan. (The other being the S2k)

Wow...that's very sad. I bought the Fit because it was made in Japan just like my old 1996 Integra.

FYI, I think some CRVs are also made in Japan.

On the up side ... the value of the earlier made in Japan models might hold better if all later models becomes locally built.

I think all the 07's were assembled in Japan with roughly 60% US parts. 08's are US/Canada. Only cars made 100% in Japan are the Fits and S2Ks as said. The new Accords are assembled in Japan but hold around 75% of US parts. This is the reason why I dont like the Civic Si's also. Motors are US, cars are Canadian. Transmission is basically the only Japan part on that car.

I have a feeling the new S2Ks are going to be US cars. :(

I always did NOT like that it was from japan.

1) it means fewer people get to enjoy this car, since japan is a smaller country with low capacity to supply for US's Fit demand
2) Fit has no options (radio, nav system, seats, sunroof)
3) fewer trims (sport and base)
4) higher cost (their economy is better than ours)

See, the "JDM"ness only appeals to some. Most drivers just want people movers.

Fortunately, if this next fit is US, this makes the current gen more valuable :) wooot resale value

Another interesting bit, some of the past CRVs were made in the UK, for example:

eBay Motors: Honda : CR-V (item 300156853526 end time Oct-07-07 15:44:37 PDT)

Here's an updated article:

October 03. 2007
South Bend Tribune: Honda sets pay for plant

October 02. 2007
Honda Media Newsroom Release: Honda Manufacturing of Indiana Reaches Milestone: Final Structural Steel Installed for Greensburg Plant

It says it will build 200,000 Civics but no mention of the Honda Fit. The Plant will open in Fall 2008 and new 2009 Fit is expected to be sold during Summer 2008. So I think were still good.

Guys, I'll tell you that folks around here are excited about the Honda plant and the jobs it's bringing in. The plant has it's own bypass and access ramps! I know a lot of people who are hoping to work there...and quite honestly, I don't share the whole "oh noes, itz gonna b built locally, so itz going to suxorz!!!111!!" mentality.

If they do end up building the Fit there (and I haven't heard anything to that effect), then we're having FitFest here and everyone has to come so we can tour the plant. :)

I'm not saying that if the Fit/Jazz is built in the US that it will suck. All I'm saying is that its a Japanese car and these days its getting harder and harder to find one thats completely built in its native land and this makes our car special in a way.

It won't be the same driving a Mustang thats built in China now would it?

Any you can't deny the level of quality control in Japan ......

you guys are jsut about ignorant.

Honda is very much intune with 5s and Lean process.....ANY plant they open will also follow those guidelines...and i'm sure they will also go along with ISO standards.

having a car made entirely in japan doesn't mean ANYTHING, other than it was made in japan. the quality will be no better and no worse. look at all the other civic's on the roads. you don't ever see the japanese manu. Eh's making more power or lasting longer than the Canadian and US manu. ones. hell, i had a canadian one that went 586k miles before i swapped it.

there are no "bragging rights" to where you car was made, that's stupid. ANYONE can go buy the same car and say the same thing. but why would you even want to say that? are you that ashamed of our great country? I, for one, am not. I work in a Lean company...and i know how the standards are set and i understand that EVERY COMPANY in the US and world will be lean within the next 10 years, or not be here. and i'm sure honda is fully aware of this and will implement this to their fullest extent.
