had the same problem with my friend's ge, good luck on trying the turn and feel method, 95% of the time, you won't get it in. The easiest way to do it is to pop out the whole axle, cut off the boot crimp, and replace the axle back in. From there make sure the bearings are repacked with grease, and reapply new crimp rings on both ends. then you can slide the whole axle aseembly back in.
This is the long way, but it will save you a lot of time from just sitting there turning and guessing that the axle is in the correct place
