I always learned that you should change your oil and your filter at the same time. This is especially true for break in. Is the filter special or something?

nope, not special.

I don't recall any car I've owned requiring a filter change with each oil change; Honda isn't unique. I've always changed the filter at the same time though. The cost savings doesn't justify mixing old oil with new.

Some time ago I remember something about changing the filter every second oil change. These days (especially with synthetic oil) the filter probably needs to be changed before the oil :-)

Just got a advert from my dealer and noticed they have a special prices for:
*) Oil Change
and
*) Oil and filter change and multi-point inspection.
Interesting because I thought they did the inspection for 'free' and never thought about oil only. My last service was oil and filter I hope (also because they charged for a filter ;-)

Even Harley-Davidson only recommends an oil filter change every SECOND oil change. I still change the oil filter every oil change.

Oil filters generally have plenty of capacity for contaminants for their application, this particular recommendation of oil change only has been around for a few years at least.

yah, change the filter... definitely the first couple of times is critical imho since there are a lot of metal shavings that come out from a brand new engine. some folks get anal and even use those magnets on the plug and filter.

Just so everybody is aware, the owners manual states that the oil filter be changed at the 10k miles oil change. I just called and had my first oil change set up. I questioned her about this as my coupon book stated an engine and oil filter change. she stated that they always change the filter with the oil.
