Question Any advantage in fuel economy of ....

using a Ow-20 over a 5w-20 ? Got approval from Honda to use a 5w-20 for the 2011 Fit instead of the 0w-20 that's etched on the oil cap and stated in the owner's manual. They also gave the go ahead for a 0w-20 for previous years that says 5w-20 on the oil cap and in the owner's manual. Gave us a case number as proof and reference to this. Asking this because thinking of using Pennzoil Ultra Synthetic 5w-20 in place of the 0w-20 Mobil 1 AFE for the warmer months and then possibly the 0w-20 for winter. Thanks

0W20 should be slightly better, from everything I read. But, it's more expensive and less available.

With a location of "usa", cant tell what climate you operate within. Do you live in Minnesota or Florida, for instance? 0W only has a big advantage over 5W in extreme cold. Yes, there may be undetectable increases in gas mileage, but Honda has to worry about fleet averages. So, if any model of Honda can get 1mpg better in the EPA test cycle using a different oil grade its a big deal for them.

I use to run 0w20 in my old Civic and it did get better mpg in the winter. Summer mpg was the same no advantage. I would get my oil changes done at the dealer and I wanted to use 0w20 in the Fit but they said it was for Hybrids only so they would not sell it to me. M1 0w20 is still hard to find, even at Walmart. I also like 0w30.

I am using Conoco 5w20 Semi synthetic now and its good to about 6500 miles before the mpg starts to fall.

Northeast . Used the Honda Genuine 0w-20 ( Conoco / Philliips ) since last fall to now . Thinking of 5w-20 for 2nd O.C.. Likely candidate is the P.U. 5w-20 which is very robust synthetic oil . Have the Mobil 1 A.F.E. 0w-20 , may take it back for the P.U..

I found this to be true in my Fit as well, roadtrips to Reno in winter (14 degrees F) I seemed to pick up a mpg or so, but who knows if it was the oil or something else (fuel quality/mix, etc).

I just picked up Mobil1 0w20 at Walmart since they were out of 5w20 and I ended up sticking with it. It costs the same.

Its both but the oil flows better at lower temps.

Exclamation Orielly's store brand 0w20 full synthetic

FWIW - I found that O'Riellys auto parts has 0w20 full synthetic oil for $5 and change. Same SAE spec as Mobil 1 0w20 full synthetic.

Using Pennzoil Platinum 0w-20 and seems fine . The 5 quart jugs of Platinum and Ultra have a $5 instant rebate attached to them at Walmart . Not all regions have this . The Platinum is $24.97 - $5.00 = $19.97 . Thus $3.99 a quart . The Ultra is $27.97 - $5.00 = $22.97 . Therefore $4.59 a quart .
