hitch + carrier... almost your everyday thread.

I am thinking about buying one of these two hitch receivers

Draw-Tite Trailer Hitch for Honda Fit 2010 - 24826

or Hidden Hitch Trailer Hitch for Honda Fit 2010 - 60218

(is it me, or do they look pretty much identical?)

And then buying one of these two carriers...

20x48 Cargo Carrier For 1-1/4" Trailer Hitch Receiver Surco Products Hitch Cargo Carrier 52017

20x48 Cargo Carrier Fits 1-1/4" Trailer Hitch Receiver Hitch Draw-Tite Hitch Cargo Carrier 6500

I'm debating whether or not to keep them both Draw-Tite brand... since I like to think that products from the same brand SHOULD work better together (coincidentally, the draw-tite combo is the least expensive), but that's not always true. And plus, the Surco carrier looks a little better aesthetically.

My question is... would this be enough to haul a Ruckus? Official weight of 194 lbs <-not a bicycle, so I think it's not quite your everyday thread.

also, i wouldnt haul a ruckus on a rack like that. get a motorcycle trailer. you're just asking for trouble by putting that much weight on the tongue

That's just the thing... the hitches have a tongue weight of 200 (some say 200-250) lbs.

The Ruckus weighs 194 (official weight with fuel, etc)... the carrier weighs 49.

Which is completely different from weight distribution.

edit: the item in the ebay link only fits class 2 (and up) hitches... they require 2" hitches. And there are no class 2 hitches for the Fit.

The hitch might be good for 200 lb tongue weight, but I'd really not want that much weight hanging off the back of the car. Get thee to harbor freight.

You can get a hitch adapter, 1 1/4 to 2 inch

I'm with Sol on this. I'd go for a solution that doesn't put that kind of weight on the back of the FIT.
This one is a bit more but it has a 1 1/4" hitch (upon request)
MOTORCYCLE HITCH HAULER TOW/TOWING CARRIER NO TRAILER | eBay

I can't remember if you are lowered too and if so, it'll likely scrape on every little dip or driveway entrance.

The hitches are identical and made by the same company (Draw-Tite = Hidden Hitch = Reese). But the Draw-Tite is actually more expensive because it doesn't include a draw bar and hitch pin. This costs $22 extra so the more expensive Hidden Hitch is actually $12 cheaper.

Also +1 on not using a basket carrier. To much leveraged stress on your frame. Loading with 194lbs will cause damage when you hit any kind of bump at speed.

Don't use that hitch hauler either or else you'll burn up the CVT on your Rukus. Buy a small, cheap, lightweight trailer and then you'll haul safe and have a utility trailer for other uses. But you have trailer storage to deal with also. If no place to store trailer then just rent from U-Haul each time you need it. Their m/c trailer daily rate is only $15 + tax, then you have no trailer maintenance, storage or registration costs to deal with. My trailer is $55 a year to register so takes me 4-5 uses a year just to break even from renting.

Just for clarification.

I take the Ruckus to work to do deliveries when its slow. But I need the Fit when it gets busy (for more orders). Any trailers needs to come off quickly when I get to work and and reattach quickly before I head home. And stores in the Fit in the meantime.

Yes, I am lowered on Swifts. And hitch adapters cut the tongue weight in half.

I did consider the hauler (hitch the front wheel), but only if I can get a dolly for the rear wheel. I wonder how hard it would be to make one.

I guess I'll just stick to what I've been doing.... loading the Ruckus IN the Fit (with the front wheel resting on the bumper/hatch opening). But lifting that rear part of the Ruckus is a pain in my back.

Not sure that's a good idea, since it leaves the front wheel to wobble like crazy. You could even be dragging the front sideways (destroying the tire). Any attachment to keep the steering straight will work against you when you turn.

Mounting the front on the cradle allows the steering fork to act as a pivot point.

looks like you have your heart set on that carrier tray. make sure you take your hitch and rack off when you take it to the dealer because you totally ripped up your subframe

Is there no way that you can leave the Ruckus inside the business when you aren't using it ?

?

Did you not read where I said I would stick to what I'm currently DOING? Which is loading the Ruckus INSIDE the Fit.

edit: the hitch wouldn't mount to a subframe anyway... it's the end of the main frame rail. The only subframe in the back is the rear axle itself. If I incur damage to my Fit... I wouldn't take it to a dealer anyway. It's out of warranty (48k miles). Nor would I try to hide the fault. I own up to my mistakes/errors/judgement calls.

I could do that. But then I also want to have it available to ride for the fun of it when I'm not working. On top of that, the business has lunch hours, while I only work dinner hours. I don't want to hassle them too much (they would have to move it out of the way).

I wouldn't mind leaving the Fit there (just pick it up when I need it), but on weekdays, they have timed parking (90 min and 4 hr) on the street which means someone would need to move it for me. And I don't have permits for the nearby parking lots. Though, I guess it's the same, I like to have it near me for easy access.
