Tires for base model Fit

I have a base model 09 Fit and need to replace 4 tires. The original size tire is hard to find, any tire size recommendations that are easier to find and cheaper, that run well with no rubbing? I found the original size tires to be squirrly at highway speeds, always needing careful attention and steering correction. The last set I put on were 185/60 R15's and they were much better. Are wider better, or stick with the 185's?

I'd go with either 185/60R15 or 195/60R15 tires myself. The 185s are in theory slightly under diameter, and the 195s in theory about the same amount over diameter. In my experience, the speedometer on my Fit is closer with my current 195 tires than it was with the previous 185 ones. It may as much be the specific tire brands/models I had as much as the nominal sizes; the precise diameters do vary some for different tire designs of the same size.

I can't say I noticed any significant differences in handling between either of these tire sizes (or, for that matter, the stock tires).

First question I have for the OP is do you run dedicated winter tires? If not, I wouldn't go with anything wider than a 185. I run dedicated winters on my '09 sport in the following configuration: 185/65-15. My summers are 205/50-16. The snows raise me up 1/4" higher than stock on Factory Acura Integra Alloy wheels and I have zero issues with rubbing (I'm at stock ride height). The next question I'd have is what is your main type of driving (miles/year & condition)?

My 205's don't rub and are pretty good at highway speeds when the road is good. when the highway pavement gets to be a little rutted from tractor trailers over time, It does take a little more attention to steering but it doesn't need as much input as the stock Fit Tires. (that said, stock sport is 185)

Right now it looks like yokohama has a $60 rebate (Visa card) with the purchase of 4 tires at Home - Discount Tire Direct . (Plus free shipping). A set of the Yoko Avid Ascend in the 195/60/15 is $66 ea. (after rebate) and the Avid Envigor is $60 ea. (after rebate) for the 185/65-15 They have warranty ratings of 85K miles and 60K miles respectively. The Ascends are about $1 cheaper per wheel in the 185 size.

If you are using them for year round, I'd go 185. If you have dedicated snows, I'd go with the 195/60-15 for a little less effort when steering.
