What issues should I expect from a long-dead battery?

I'm inheriting a 2009 Fit. It was "stored" (put in a garage) back in February where it has sat since. The battery died at some point (no one knows how/why).

I've removed and charged the battery and I'm hoping I can simply install it and start the car, but I've been told that after a long period without the battery, some systems might need resetting. I have not yet tried to start the car, because it's a couple of towns away.

What should I expect when I put the battery back in? Should the car start or is there something I need to do to reset electronics, etc?

Thanks,

John

Start the car, put in the radio code and drive the car!

Provided there were no problems with the car prior to it being stored for that short period of time you should not have any problems. The only issue is whenever you disconnect a battery it resets the ECU. So if you are taking it for an inspection soon thereafter the various systems will not show "ready" if you connect a code reader to the OBDII port. After a couple hundred miles or less systems will then show "ready" and passing a inspection will not be an issue.

my car (2010) has been sitting on the back lost at my local Honda dealer since May 6th. I'll let ya know whenever they get the airbag fixed.

Get the radio codes if you do not have them. You are going to need them.

If that battery has sat that long, even if you charged it back up, likely wont last very long. Starter batteries need to be maintained with a full charge otherwise the internal plates begin to sulfate. This crusty stuff builds up on the plates and causes the battery to not have as much of a charge because its not dissolved in the acid anymore. Bottom line, be ready to spend money on a new battery before the winter.

This would be my concern also (although I am no battery expert).
