USB Port to Charge cell phone, etc

Has anybody tried connecting their cell phone, palm pilot, bluetooth device, etc to the USB port to see if it charges it? Clearly, there won't be any data/music connection . . . but I have several devices that can be charged when connected to the USB port of a PC.

I've heard that this is a powered port (it charges an iPod), but didn't know if it would charge anything else.

I can test it on a blackberry but I know sometimes there might not be enough current available on the USB and the blackberry gives a warning message and won't charge. I'll try it tonite when I get home.

KCHoosier will become famous soon enough
I have a Sansa Sandisk MP3 player that will charge through the port. It won't play music, since it isn't Apple iPod, but it charges the battery.

can you hardwire a 12v to USB cable and just hide it away when not in use?

I think USB only uses 5v not 12v so unless you want to get a voltage regulator then you just can't hardwire it.

I wonder if you could use a usb hub with this? If so, could it provide enough current to do all kinds of things?

a hub like this:

maybe add a usb notebook light to the glove compartment? like this:
Hong Kong SAR USB LED Light. Manufacturer

nah, you might as well spring for the flexible usb powered "neon" light. like this:
On Sale, buy Magic neon wire - blue Flexible USB Neon Wire - USB or Battery powered

or maybe keep a beverage cold in there? like this:
Google Image Result for http://www.slashgear.com/gallery/data_files/1/4/6/usb_fridge_front.jpg

I remember reading something like the iPhone (maybe 3g) will only charge if it's in airplane mode.

Nah, people have confirmed that the iPhone, 3G or otherwise works fine. The charging issue people though might occur is because Apple stopped allowing charging from the firewire pin on the 3G iPhone. It only charges on the USB pin now, but that's no problem since the Fit uses USB anyway. The reason that the phone will ask you to put it in airplane mode is to cut down on GSM buzz that can sometimes come through unshielded speakers. This only happens if the phone is on the EDGE network, not 3G, and as far as I know, people haven't had any problems with GSM buzz at all. It can vary from car to car. I get no buzz in my wife's Prius, but I get it in my work vehicle (Dodge Caravan) if I don't keep the phone far from the speakers or head unit.
