Fan control 1-3 out

Anyone have problems with the fan control? On one of our Fits (we have four in a delivery fleet), the first three levels stopped working on the fan control, but the fourth (highest) fan level is still working.

Any ideas? Haven't had a chance yet to check fuses, but seems they would all be on the same fuse?

Sounds like a resistor on the blower motor is out. Very common problem on older water-cooled Volkswagens, and the fan setup on a Fit is no more complex than an 80's VW. This is common on other vehicles as well. Definitely a dealer issue.

Service bulletin 09-097 HVAC blower motor only works on high.

Needs a new blower motor transistor pack, if your VIN falls between 000001 AND 072640 it applies as long as the car is under warranty.

If someone wants me to send the pdf I will.

so will it be a smart idea to let the dealer change it first before it breaks? will the dealer do that for us, if it falls between that vin #? i dont want to wait till warranty is over and it breaks.

You are the man! I don't have this problem, but it's great that there's somebody that knows about all this stuff .

As I understand it, you can't have a service done just because it shows up in a service bulletin -- you actually have to be having the problem. Though rhyneba could probably clarify.

It does seem pretty easy and cheap to change the resistor pack though... but the SB also calls for the replacement of the blower motor, which isn't so cheap...

I had this issue with my Grand Prix a few years back (only highest blower setting worked). It was recommended to change both the resistor, as well as the blower motor. I changed only the resistor and everything worked fine after that. I think it's more of a convenience/precautionary measure to do both since you were already working in the area.

The condition must apply for the repair to be completed. And yes, they will replace the blower motor that caused the failure of the transistor pack. Because of the high frequency of failure on transistor packs I see on older Hondas I run my fan on the higher speed settings if I run it at all. The lower speeds generate more heat from resistance thus shortening it's life. Turned off my automatic locking for similar reasons.

This is a common design for many makes and models. No reason to limit yourself to your desired fan speed and be uncomfortable. If the resistor pack blows just replace it for $15. From Honda parts fiche it looks to be easily accessible and 5 minute job tops. Fan motor will not need to be replaced 99% of the time for normal failure of the resistor. Early life failures (caused by motor) will be covered under warranty and motor replaced per TSB.

I had this happen 2 weeks ago. Showed up at the dealer, told them 1-3 didnt work. had it fixed the next day first thing in the morning in less than 1 hour. Didnt have to do anything other than point to the problem and hand them the keys..

+1, mine stopped working about a year ago, dealer knew about the problem & fixed in less than an hour as well. No problem since then.

Mine went out, and I change the resistor myself. It was a simple enough repair. It worked like gangbusters, for about 30 minutes. Now it is doing it again.

Jdufford, if your car still under warranty bring it back to the dealer. My 09 had the same issue its not the resistor its the HVAC Blower. I took it to MW in Barrington and it took 2 days. They have to order the part and install it the next day and pick up later in the afternoon.

Thanks Augee, I drive by that place almost daily, but my car is out of warranty. My big concern is if I buy another fan, whats to say the new one doesn't do the same thing, then I am out about 200.00. I'm worried Honda hasn't done anything or changed the design of the fan at all to correct the problem.

(note the letter "S"; this only applies to Fits assembled at the Sazuka plant)

Symptom
The HVAC blower motor only works on high speed.

Probable Cause
Excessive current draw from the HVAC blower motor causes the blower resistor to fail.

Corrective action
Replace the HVAC blower motor and the blower resistor.
If your Fit falls within the range of VINs, given that you've already blown a 2nd resistor set, I think it's a near certainty the problem rests with the blower motor.

Edit:
From the bulletin: "Any repair performed after warranty may be eligible for goodwill consideration." You may not have to pay anything.

Given that there's a TSB about the problem, and it isn't nearly as big a problem with the later years, its a good guess that they changed something to make it less of a problem.
