My father-in-law has a 12 civic lx and he got the same thing the other day. He isn't the most car savy guy. But he didn't realize on most cars you should twist it till you hear 3 clicks. However he said he stopped and tightened it again. I think he said it was after fueling the car. I remember in the good ole days when you would just throw a CEL and then you'd freak out and have to drive to autozone and have it read. Youngsters today got it so easy, with cars telling you whats exactly wrong on the Odometer .

you can also wipe down the cap and the filler top to remove anything that might interfere with the seal.
To delete the code, sometimes they do not go away.
It is pretty easy to buy an OBDII reader that will come in handy. Nowadays, if you have a smart phone, the easiest and inexpensive method is to get a bluetooth obdII interface device then get either an iphone/android app to connect to it.
Nowadays autozone won't read your codes for free anymore in CA

This has happened to me a couple of times. Both times I filled up the evening before it happened. The next morning the fuel cap message popped up. Most likely I didn't correctly tighten the cap. I make sure now to turn the cap until it clicks twice.
