DIY Transmission Filter

Okay this topic has been talked about but not really
shown in detail. So here goes.

First get yourself one of these.

Now get some tools out.
lets see a Phillips and a flat head screwdriver.
10mm socket with extension
and ratchet.
a couple of different types of pliers
and maybe a few other things i might have missed.

Now all marked in red is what your going to have to remove
or loosen.
Basically you have to take out the battery and air box to do this
job. Very easy if you have tools and some guts
here is under the hood.

here is a close up of some of the hoses that need to come out.

this is what you should have out of your car by now.

This is what your car looks like.
in red i circled the trans filter.
a 10mm bolt and it's out.

Take off the clamps and the 10mm bolts and it's out.

This is a pic of the new filter next to the strap that hold the filter in place.
Notice it is made to handle the filter only one way. so this eliminates putting
it in backwards.

Now just put everything back in reverse and your all set.

Very nice write up and seems easy enough. Did you change the fluid before the filter? How many miles?

I'm also curious if you had to add more fluid than normal if you changed the fluid.

i had the oil changed a few weeks ago.
my friend has a shop so he used his snap-on machine to
do a flush. i used about 9 to 10 qt

also another note for everyone. my car was sitting over night
before i did this. So when i took off the filter there was no mess.
seems as though gravity tokes its coarse and all the oil went
back into the tranny.

I didn't think it held that much fluid. What type of fluid did you use? Honda or something else?

Old thread, but awsome nevertheless.

+++Reps.

How many miles on the trans when you changed the filter?

So far, I change the trans oil every 30K miles and was thinking to change the filter every 60K.

I just flushed my auto transmission 09 GE 08 at 50K miles, no sludge on magnetic plug, still clear red and not dark red. There is not much fluid from torque converter and cooler, next time at 100K I'll drain and replace the filter, no need to replace the filter at this time. I believe GE 08 has DW-1 synthetic filled at factory and not Z1.

hey Niko, nice write up you have there

I wonder how much did you get your atf filter from honda?

Dealerships here don't even realize the AT has a filter for the atf. All of them say we need to open up the gearbox to find it. So I figure, maybe if I seem to outsmart them by pointing out where filter is, they might want to charge a super premium price since I am the only guy ever come up pointing out that thing. And I am 100% sure they won't have the filter in stock since they don't even know it exists.

Any thoughts?

cant remember how much i paid for it now. it was 20 or less.
the key for me is i wait till i need a bunch of stuff and do an
internet order. save boat loads of money.

Think about it. We are changing Automatic transmission fluid. Not much of that stuff in a manual tranny.

Thank you for confirming.
My English is just acceptable and understanding forum messages is not always so easy. Best regards.
