I do not need the extra power of the 2.4 (I think its 158hp), and then go down to 29mpg...

Welcome to Toyota's world! I noticed this when I was shopping the Matrix. There are dozens of different versions of the car available, all with different prices, different packages.. it all got so confusing. The Fit made it easy! Manual or AT? OK. Base or Sport? OK. Color? OK. DONE!! Easy as pie. I wish more manufacturers would take this route.. none of this nickel-and-dime stuff in order to publish a cheaper "starting" price.
I also appreciated how simple it was to decide on which Fit I wanted. And fortunately Honda put everything I needed into the Sport model. Why not "vote" against the Toyota/Vibe corporate mindset by getting a Fit? You'll spend less at the outset and probably less over the life of the car, thanks to Honda quality. I have parked my Fit next to Vibes and Matrixes, and was struck with the size difference. As you point out, your mpg will be significantly better with a Fit, plus the Fit uses its space so efficiently. Also, be sure to check and see if you can get side curtain airbags in the Toyota/Vibe. This important safety feature may be bundled in with some expensive package giving you exotic junk you don't need.
