Actually I'm using about 35L per week (480 km, give or take) so average around 7.2 L/100KM with my 2004 Mazda3 Sport GT, automatic. I do use the cruise as much as possible and try not to accelerate/brake hard, so I think that has made a huge difference. In any event, the Honda Fit will be an improvement in my weekly fuel bill, though I don't think it will be a HUGE difference, based on the above.

I agree that ordering a car you haven't test driven, let alone SEEN is nuts! I barely got to see/sit in a 2008 Fit LX. It was sold so I couldn't test drive it. I'm basing my decision solely on the fact that I liked what I briefly saw in the 2008 and knowing that the 2009 is supposed to be an improvement in almost all areas. I also extensively researched the 2008 and most reviews (ok, all I came across) rank it as the #1 subcompact.

However, I only placed my $500 after being assured that it was fully refundable at any time. When my car does arrive, I'll take a very thorough look, test drive, THEN decide if I do want to buy it. The "pre-order/deposit" (goes towards purchase price, if you do buy it) just assures you of getting a car. All I needed to tell the dealer was the color and transmission.

I called around to alot of dealerships and few had any 2008s left. They are selling like crazy and the 2009s are expected to sell with even more intensity. I believe (from what the 2 dealers I spoke to told me) that the first "allotments" are already all reserved for customers. Therefore, if you do want one, you will likely have to wait until November. Also, once these hit the showrooms and begin to be publicised, you can believe that the demand is going to hit the roof even more! Under those circumstances, you'd be well advised to place a pre-order NOW, but be sure that it is fully refundable. You really have nothing to lose in that case since you can refuse the car once you actually do see it/test drive it....
