This is awesome! Thanks for sharing. I have been looking for an an alternative enclosed intake air filter to the PRM air filter for quite some time now. I may be utilizing this setup in the future on another vehicle. Very nice!

Yup, made some good progress. Dyno testing set for Saturday morning. They are booked solid this week!

 

The foaming from my mouth has dried up and is re-foaming again.

Results......RESULTS.

 

5.7 SAE peak hp gain from tuning. Much smoother power band and better drivability.

 

That is significant! Very nice for so minimal amount of mods. The midrange is very usable. The horsepower drop at around 5700rpm was smoothed out and the top end is beautiful. Just what I'm looking for but to move the top rpm from 6500rpm to 7200rpm on my auto.

**Number crunching**
From looking at my timeslips back in May, I was averaging 15.4@89mph (with intake and exhaust). A gain of 6hp tuning would've allowed the car to run 15.2@90mph on a regular basis. I think it's reasonable to think a manual transmission Fit that is slightly lighter to be able to run 3/10ths of a second faster than a CVT. Just saying! :-)

 

It would be very cool to see one in the 14s.

We added an intake after the initial tuning. Lost power, did more tuning, got back to where we were. Almost identical dyno plots with no additional peak gains. IATs were increased by 20 degrees. There's two other companies working on intakes so maybe we'll get a chance to see if they make any improvements.

Hopefully we'll get someone to send us a PCD so we can test that as well. I also think a larger throttle body will help. There's plenty more testing to be done on this platform.

 

So as an update for everybody else along with the number shown driving it is wonderful especially up top much smoother and climbs we easier definitely worth it for our little fits

 

When the intake was dyno'd, was the hood opened or closed? Were all the runs done with the hood open or closed?

 

Hood was open, of course.

 

Interesting! I was wondering to what extent the open hood would have helped with the intake. The intake (Myxal Short Ram) I had made and tested that was very similar to the tested intake had IATs around 150-165F at the dragstrip when outside temps were around 75F. This is while idling waiting in the staging lanes to run. My 1/4 mile runs suffered as well, running 1-2mph slower than stock (81-82mph vs 82-83mph) and 1-2/10th's of a second slower than stock (17.3-17.4 vs 17.1-17.2). All tested the same day, same track. It was the only intake that performed worse than any of the others I made, while also being worse than stock. That location near the firewall and over the transmission was KILLER.

I was expecting it to be worse so that's why I asked. I don't want people to get the impression that intakes suck and will not work for this vehicle. The Weapon R one will perform a tiny bit better than the tested intake but the heat from the radiator blowing on it will still sap it's overall potential. I made a PRM intake that sucked in air at the exact location of the Weapon R and tested it as well. This was before modifying the PRM intake to suck in cool air only.

 

It was worse in that we lost power with the intake, then further tuning was needed to get it back... but at least we were able to get it back. In your scenario you weren't able to tune during your tests. The factory intake is taking air from the front so it will always have better IATs than SRI. I'd like to test a cold air.

On the factory tune with the intake low end lost a bit, midrange was the same, and top end had a bit of a gain, but that's with inefficient CAM angles. I imagine a drop in filter would do similar for the top end.

 

Wow...the silence is deafening in here. That's too bad! This engine has so much potential. I personally can't wait to start with getting my engine tuned. I have faith it will be a tiny beast.

If I can line up to a late model Civic Si, Ford Fiesta ST etc on the strip, that would be pretty cool. I'll definitely have the Misses make a video or two.

 

I'm excited to hear all the buzz! As someone who can't speak tuning at all, can someone tell me what the process/cost of tuning might be? Will I be able to get a tune without changing the factory intake? I live in California and there will likely never be a CARB-legal intake option but a proper tune sounds like a great investment. Thanks!
