Adding a 12 Volt Outlet

I hate tearing into a new car without the shop manual, but whatta ya gonna do? Here's how I installed a 12v outlet in the panel with the other outlets.

There is a silver screw, upper left, holding this piece in place. Remove that and then disengage the clip in the upper right.

To remove the HDMI and USB wires, pry outward on the little plastic flaps that hold the plugs in place. I used a screwdriver to loosen one side and then loosened the other one. Take your time.

There is another connector above those two. Push down on the end near the wire, and the plug will pull out easily.

I think this new outlet will be powered all the time from a fuse block in the driver's footwell. Power will come directly from the battery. I am going to tap into the wire for the standard 12v outlet and run that to another fuse block. That will be for things that are powered on only when the car is powered - like the dashcam, XM radio, and GPS. I will have all three plugged into separate 12v outlets under the dash. I'll probably put some colored LED strips I have from another car under the seats and the dash, and they will get power from that fuse block.

I used a hole saw to cut the initial opening for the 12v outlet, but it was too small. Better too small that too big. I used a tapered stone on a drill to enlarge the opening.

Now let's see if I can post some pictures.
