GK5 Door Bracket Recall Experience

Got it done at Planet Honda on rt22 in Union, NJ.

After i got my car back, there was a rattle in the passenger side door, but when they took the cap off, they couldnt find anything. When i got home, i noticed they got the glue that holds the vapor barrier on the inside of the door cap all over my paint and tinted windows. Parked in the sun to let it get heated up then sacrificed a microfiber towel with lots of QD to clean it all off. Also, in the last pic, they over-torqued an interior bolt or screw and it is now about to pierce outward from my door handle. You can clearly see the dimple from the backside of the screw/bolt.

Ugh, i hate letting other people touch my cars.

WOW! I would have either taken it back for them to clean off or asked for a discount on services. That is so incredibly unprofessional. And to give it back to you like that... did they think you wouldn't notice? Did you at least contact the shop and speak with a manager/owner?? I'm glad you were able to safely and effectively remove it from your tint and paint. Seriously... WOW.

Sorry you had problems with the door handle repair. I am gald you got it cleaned up. They broke a trim piece when they did mine and took a month to get another. Then when I got it ack a second time the inner door panels were never locked in place and replacement part not fitted correctly. Hopefully I will not have any warrenty or recall issues from now on. They sure will never touch it for any work or maintenance.

I guess I got lucky, I just got a bit of grease on the windows and a plastic cover that I had to snap back into place.

I thought I had a bad experience with the goo all over and the paint chips but that protrusion through the door handle takes the prize. Are they replacing that?

The gooey glue I can deal with as long as it was easy to clean off and doesn't eat into the paint.

The over-torqued protusion I would have brought that shit back and had it replaced on their dime.

Once again, my trust with Honda quality has diminished greatly.

That's just poor work quality in my honest option.

The inner door handle bracket is indeed... a messy job in all honesty; however, the tech performing the work should have taken much more care in prepping the vehicle to be worked on and FOR DANG SURE take off the black gooey material that holds on the water skirt. A little bit of brake clean on a towel to get it off then touch up with quick detailer like Mequiar's Wash and Wax... DONE!

I have NEVER seen this particular recall go this far south at my shop (even for the first timers performing this)... let alone have the customer receive their vehicle like this.

I'd definitely take the car back and bring it to the manager's attention, supplying the pictures as well. Ask if an actual repair tech or a lube tech has done the job, Honda highly frowns upon shops that do this.

i did a walk around before leaving the dealer, and i noticed the rattle in the door. which is why i had them take a look. i also pointed out the goo ALL OVER the paint. they grabbed a rag and started wiping, and smeared it all over. making it worse. i cleaned it myself when i got home because clearly, they had no idea what they are doing

that is horrible. the job itself is very simple, it was just due to someone not caring about their job. at all.

that's not too bad, i would have been fine if i got away with something so minor

i didnt have a chance to go back yet. but honestly, i don't want them touching my car again after cleaning all of that shit off. it was a pain. i have lots of pictures, i am sending it straight to Corporate Honda

agreed, everything about this simple recall job screams carelessness. i did bring it to the manager's attention, but he didnt care tbh. watched from the window while they chatted about my car, but didnt look like they were going to do anything. so i walked out there and talked to them directly. that was only when he instructed the tech to take the door cap off and check for the rattle. i dont want anyone from that dealership touching my car again, im going to just send a complain straight to Corporate HQ

So i was still getting smears all over my windows. Which meant that something on the inside of the door cap was spreading it all over the place. I ended up taking the door caps off and what did i find? They somehow smeared the glue all over the inside of the vapor barrier. I tried cleaning it off but to no avail. I ended up covering the inside of the vapor barrier with duct tape to cover it up so that it wouldnt smear onto the window any further. I also discovered that the Honda tech didnt bother to line the vapor barrier back up with how it came from the factory, and was barely covering the door. He also smeared it all over the inside all over the place. It's a minorly messy job which i understand, but when i did it myself (taking roughly 15m per door which included lots of cleaning to get the glue off everything on the inside), i didnt get it anywhere, nor did I make a mess. 100% carelessness and 0% care for the quality of their work.

Do it! Contact with American Honda and also contact the District Parts & Service Manager for your area/that dealer, provide both the information and documentation of this service and go from there.

It's a shame that the service manager effectively brushed you under the rug like this and didn't put forth actual effort to resolve this careless mishap... BUT unfortunately they shat the bed and failed to clean it. Therefore they're going to sleep in the mess they created.

It seems you work at Honda Hootie, is that correct? Would you so happen to have an email i could reach out to over at HQ? I tried googling and searching, but it seems they only have a twitter handle (i dont use twitter) to contact them. i know they have an account on Fitfreak, so i PM'd them there for now. but i want to make sure this gets visibility somewhere higher up

Yes, I work at a Honda automobile dealership as a tech.

I do not have access to any email address or anything to contact American Honda directly; however, try the link below. It should be the number to Honda automobile customer service during their listed hours.

Customer Service for American Honda Motor Co., Inc.

My dealer, Leith Honda, replaced the radio head unit with perfect work and cleanliness.

They are really good just like my previous Leith dealership, Leith Toyota.

Again, I feel validated in my lifelong commitment to doing ALL work myself. (And in whatever negative comments I've made regarding dealerships; sure, there MIGHT be good ones and good techs, but how to be sure?)

Regardless of what Honda might or might not do for the OP, consider how much stress he's experienced and how much time he's spent on this nonsense. I did the door bracket recall myself; it cost about $25 and took an afternoon in my well-lighted, climate-controlled garage, listening to my choice of music. No stress. Minor annoyance that Honda did something so stupid as to install unpainted, rust-prone pieces inside every door. That's it.

IMO, at this point the dealership needs to give the OP a comparable loaner car, put their best man on the job to REPLACE every damaged part, and apologize. Good luck with Honda corporate.

I had similar issues with the door handle recall on my car, including misaligned door weather seals (rain leaked into the interior), and adhesive that got smeared on the window every time I rolled the window down. Each issue took an additional trip to the dealer and a half day of lost time out of work to resolve.

I still have a series of dents and paint chips along the rear pass. side door where it looks like they tried using a screwdriver to remove the door panel. I pointed the damage out to the service department, but they refused to acknowledge that they did it. I was going to fix it myself, but given the other unfixable issues with the car, I'm not sure I care any longer.

Did you ever get in touch with Honda or the district parts and service manager in your area?

Unbelievable. I took my car there for the a free oil change and the door handle recalls and they took over an hour on just the driver handle. I asked for the car back because I had to run and they also left greasy fingerprints on my window and panels. Terrible customer service.
