Keeping backup camera clean...

Since it's exposed to the elements, any way to keep it clean? I have a small spray bottle filled with rain-x washer fluid I keep in the trunk, so when I notice it's dirty I just give it a few spritz and it's good to go for a while.

Would have been cool to have a little nozzle that sprayed it off if you sprayed the rear window, but not the end of the world.

Yeah, such is life with hatchback cars. All the dirt that gets kicked up behind the car gets deposited on the back of the car. This is especially bad in the winter, of course.

I was thinking about a plastic shroud for the camera, to shield it from dirt from the bottom, but have not done much further work. It might restrict the view.

A posible solution but not factible( I think) Is put the camera inside where the backup windshield wiper is. So every time you get bad weather and you put it in reverse it will clean in automatic or you could clean it from inside.
Million dollar idea or maybe not.

News: G&M, Collision mitigation and winter is a tough mix

Backup cameras, collision mitigation system, all defeated in winter weather, snow. Clean cameras with windshield washer fluid and a soft cloth.

My brother-in-law does autoglass for a living. He said that the ones that have cameras in the windshield also will need to be recalibrated by the dealerships after he replaces a windshield. This is an additional cost.

yah I just wipe the lens from time to time.

my GTI's rear camera is hidden inside its rear VW emblem/handle for the rear gate. pretty cool. the handle pops open when I back up, den closes after a few seconds going forward. so no issue getting dirty lens in the salt belt state... clean rear view each time.

Yet one more thing to malfunction, being motorized in some way....not that the loss of a rear view camera would be earth shattering, beings as cars have been driven for well over a century without 'em

You can clean them all you want. Some days, a mile down the road and they're filthy and unusable again. I wonder how this will play out with autonomous vehicles. It's no coincidence that most of the development on autonomous vehicles seems to be taking place in California instead of the real world.
