Mazda Japan yMAZDAzƒ[ƒhƒXƒ^[20Žü”N‹L”OŽÔ

Mazda’s celebrating its popular roadster’s 20th anniversary by unveiling a special edition Mazda MX-5 to be sold through Japanese showrooms. The commemorative Mazda MX-5 is based on the Roadster RS soft-top (with a 6 speed manual transmission) or the VS Power Retractable Hard Top (RHT) model (a 6 speed automatic transmission).

The special edition model adds features like RECARO bucket sport seats (Black Alcantara and red leather), exclusive “20th Anniversary” badges (on each side fender), clear front fog lights and bezels, 17-inch aluminum wheels fitted with 205/45R17 84W tires, front strut tower bar (cowl connecting type), fabric soft top with glass rear window (soft-top model only), heated seats with five temperature settings and soft padding (synthetic leather door armrests and center console lid).

The model is only offered with a Crystal White Pearl Mica paint finish. The soft top version with the manual transmission will set you back 2,860,000 yen ($30,170 USD) while the retractable hard top version costs 3,110,000 yen ($32 807 USD).

The special edition’s launch also coincides with an announcement that the total production of Mazda Roadsters “now stands in excess of 860,000 units” across more than 60 countries.

HIROSHIMA, Japan—To commemorate 20 years of Mazda Roadster (known overseas as the Mazda MX-5) sales, Mazda Motor Corporation has released a special edition version of its lightweight, two-seat, open-top sports car for the Japanese market. The Roadster was certified as the world’s most produced two-seat, open-top sports cars by Guinness World Records when production reached 800,000 units. Total production of the Mazda Roadster now stands in excess of 860,000 units.

The Roadster 20th Anniversary is based on the Roadster RS soft-top model with a six-speed manual transmission, and the VS Power Retractable Hard Top (RHT) hard-top model with a six-speed automatic transmission. A few days ago, Mazda announced a special-edition MX-5 Miata in Crystal White Pearl Mica to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the car that restored the roadster. They should have been making a splash about this car instead, a concept MX-5 Superlight speedster that is due in Frankfurt next month.

Mazda has only let a couple of beans spill about the car: it's extra light weight improves handling, fuel economy, and CO2 emissions. That's all we know. But we can guess that a Miata that's missing a windshield, door handles, roof, and any interior comforts beyond seats would be a racer's dream.

Oh, but do notice that while there's no radio or speakers, the car does include a curved center console that supports the increasingly common iPhone. We'll be at Frankfurt next month making a beeline for this one. In the meantime, you can check out the images below or check out the official press release after the jump.

Mazda 'MX-5 Superlight version' Show Car to Premiere at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show

HIROSHIMA, Japan-
The Mazda MX-5 Superlight version, a show car capturing the pure essence of the world's most popular roadster, will see its world premiere at the 63rd Frankfurt Motor Show, which will be held from September 15 through 27, 2009.

After 20 years of global success, the Mazda MX-5 is the best-selling two-seat sports car in the world. At Frankfurt, Mazda will present a new take on its affordable roadster with an all-new show car, the Mazda MX-5 Superlight version, designed at Mazda's studio in Frankfurt, Germany. A pure show car, it takes the lightweight technology that Mazda is famous for to a new level, improving driving performance, handling, fuel economy and CO2 emissions. This is combined with a radical exterior design requiring no windshield, and sporty chassis settings for pure roadster driving fun.

The new Mazda MX-5 Superlight version will be unveiled at Mazda's press conference in Hall 3.1, Stand A7, on September15 at 12:45 local time.

The seats in the white one are sick.

That roadster version would be much cooler if it had a body line breaking up the plain looking profile of the car.

Not for $32k! I'd rather get an NA (gen) MX-5 (I had one for my first car), and do some type of engine swap with FI.
