I see one at work every day. Those things are tiny. I'd feel unsafe driving one of those.

I feel unsafe in any vehicle. Anything can happen on the road especially how carelessly people drive these days.

a guy bought one on the end of my street. I would never be able to get in and out of one of those. oh and they are just plain stupid. The gas mileage does not justify a 18k price tag.

Even worse, Smart car tipping -

Tip and run? The Cupholder – BBC Top Gear

If you’re of a rural bent, you’ll have heard of cow-tipping – the sport where cruel country-dwellers tip a dozing bovine off its feet and into the grass for the simple reason that the lumbering beast finds it near-impossible to stand up again.
Well, exchange the world ‘cow’ for ‘ForTwo’, and the word ‘grass’ for ‘canal’ and you’ve hit upon the phenomenon of ‘Smart Smijten’, currently sweeping the Netherlands.
Yes, Amsterdam police have reported a worrying rise in the cases of Smart-tipping, as high-spirited Dutchmen tip ForTwos into local canals after a long night on the Oranjeboom.
Taking advantage of owners who park their ForTwos perpendicular to the water’s edgewater, the feckless Smijteners lift the front of the poor Smart and shove it backwards into the canal.
The police say they have known about this trend for a while, but have tried to keep quiet about it to prevent copycat crimes.
Which means, er, we shouldn’t have said anything.
Forget what you just read.
And don’t park your ForTwo next to water.

the price on them for a fuel economy that doesn't really destroy a fit, yaris, yadda yadda is ridiculous.

sure they get a better gas mileage but for 2K less i can cart around 3-4 friends, a cooler and have a party

with a smart car you might get your groceries in there....for a couple days...

they are meh

91 OCTANE!?!?! I have to look like a dork and drive in a car that looks like those orange and red plastic push cars and be no safer in a wreck than if I was driving a tin can AND I have to fill it up with 91 octane? Yeah.... worst car in recent automotive history.

the only crumple zone on a Smart Car is your face... the body is rigid but as soon as you hit something or are hit by another car, all bets are off

It's amazing, but compared to the Dumb For 2, the fit is dead sexy. I'm normally a fan of small cars, but that thing reminds me of a phone booth on wheels.

If you want maximum efficiency, you need to use 91. It's just how the engine was tuned, even with a relatively mild 10:1 compression ratio. That being said, you can get away with using a fuel with a lower octane rating. Performance will suffer when the ECU detects knock (through detonation) and as a result, timing is pulled.

For $5000 or even $8000 it'd be worth considering getting one to putter around town. But as long as you can get a Nissan Versa for $10000 with not-much-worse gas mileage AND a back seat, it would be ridiculous to spend any more than that on a Smart. Let alone DOUBLE.
