replacement key cutting cost

I lost one of the keys for my fit, and wonder how much it would cost to cut another key that works + program it. i found uncut keys online for like 40 bucks. but my dealer said it would be 160... that's ridiculous.. and we never got a valet key for our fit.. did anybody else get a valet?/ does anybody know someone who knows more about this stuff? thanks in advance.

update:
okay i went to the dealer and the normal prices are as follows:
105-110 flat reprogramming fee ( doesnt' matter how many keys done)
60-65 for the keys.

i found one dealer selling keys for 45.. but charged the full 110 for the reprogramming..
then found another dealer selling keys for 80! but reprogramming for 52.. so i asked him to price match the 45. he gave them to me for 60.. so ended up being 170 and i had a 25 off 150 service coupon.. so got two keys for 150...

I've been thinking along the same lines, as I'm always paranoid about losing things. Is there any reason why a regular Fit key would not work in a Fit with auto-locks? (i.e., just the key, without remote). I assume the key is chipped somehow, and has to be both cut and programmed to work with a specific car. Even just hanging on a hook in a closet would provide some peace of mind.

the key without the remote probably wouldn't have the chip in it, and therefore wouldn't work. i was in hong kong and was talking to a lock smith who said that it was possible for a third party to do this, but another one i talked to said that you could cut one to open the door, but it wouldn't turn on the car...

i mean having one key is a huge problem for my family, b/c we have 4 people who use that car.. and one time i accdinetly took the key to school with me.. and i bike to school. 6 miles away. and i had to turn back to return the key..

The key for the Base Fit, without the keyless entry built in, will work on the Sport model. All keys have the chip.

And to the OP, Fits do not come with a valet key.

Shop around at the dealers in your area about cutting and programming. When I wanted to get another key made for my Fit, I called the 3 dealers near me, and the prices ranged from $100 to $169.

i think i'd prefer to have the keyless entry, it just makes it so that the paint doesn't get all scratched up trying to fit the key into the hole all the time.

do we have to go to a honda dealer to do it? are there any shops around that do this kind of stuff? or is that illegal?

The only difference between a valet key and a regular key on a Honda is the valet won't open the glove box and trunk. The fit is a hatch back and the glove box doesn't have a lock. Valet key makes no sense on the fit.

Thanks for the explanation; I always wondered what a valet key was for. Am I correct to assume than an unchipped key can not be used to start a Fit? It's sad that our society requires such extreme security measures to discourage theft, but that's the way it is.

an unchipped or not registered chip key will turn the switch and crank the engine but the spark plugs will not fire. Technically you could have a non chipped key turn the ignition and a chipped key close enough to the steering column and fake the system out.

this is exactly what i was planning on doing, but if another key is only like 100 bucks i might as well just get another one.

I did get a valet key with my Fit. It only work on the door. Can't even turn the ignition with it. From what I've seen our key have to be in the ignition for us to start the car. It's not infrared so having a nonchipped/registered cut key and a chipped/registered key next to it will not work.

When i got my fit, my salesman was a longtime friend with the family so he hooked us up with a bunch of goodies on the fit including the all season mats, the plastic rear lip for the bumper the a valet key.

nope doubt it. The chip is different and the type of key looks different. The fit doesn't have a trunk opener.

Compare the FCC ID and ID on the accord keys to your stock key to see if it works.

Each key should have a different "chip" so they can't start another Fit. Fit and Accord key can't start any other. Otherwise someone with an Accord key would be able to start your Fit.
