Fit keys....waterproof??

Thinking of putting my extra Fit key somewhere on the outside of the vehicle....as I do all my cars....since the keys have all the remote tech stuff on them, are they waterproof/durable, can they handle the elements??

considering the Fit isnt an off road capable vehicle, ill say it isnt weather proof.

it is however water resistant to some degree (dropped my keys in the snow), but i dont think it would hold up to submergence for very long.

maybe try using a hide a key type box?

A tiny ziplock bag may be your solution. Just don't put the key somewhere the battery might get cooked, like anywhere near the exhaust system.

Why don't you just have a plain copy made without the remote transmitter or fancy immobilizer chip? I assume you have this key only for when you lock your keys in the car. Sure, when you unlock the door with this key your alarm will go off, but you can just grab the real key inside the car and disarm the system.

My keys fell off a pier into about 8ft of water for about 10 min until I could dive down and find them. They never missed a beat, I couldn't believe it. Not sure I'd put them through a regular beating though. Good luck...

Talking Snorkeling

I just got home after a half hour snorkeling in Glenelg Bay. No worries with the key. It still locks/unlocks the car

I like clicq's idea.. cheaper and it works just for opening the door for you to grap the real key... the plain jane key will have no water issues, no batteries freezing issues, no batteries heated up issues during hot days

I've run one of my keys through a normal wash (and dry!) cycle before and it worked fine afterwards, but I wouldn't mount it outside my car unless it was in some sort of plastic bag, etc....

To date: I've owned my Fit since March, 2007 and my key has accidentally gone through 4 wash cycles!! I wouldn't say it's waterproof, but it darn sure is DURABLE!!
