I think you have got it. DFCO is only good when slowing down. Keep in mind that DFCO only works until about 1500rpms on the 2007-2008 FIT Manual and the fuel starts flowing once the rpms reach 1500 and below. I am not sure of the range on the 2009 FITs. I rarely use DFCO(Only when I can't plan or estimate the traffic ahead). I just cut the fuel pump off instead and use the brakes.

1st +60 for me.
did 1/2 tank because I'm headed AM to Dade county. Traffic there is heavy and I expect it will hard to doing the aggressive methods and slow speeds. Did not want to trash my work for the last 322 miles

Big shift for me was extending the glide to 40mph from 45/40 and the weather is not as hot with mid 80's now

Excellent Paul! I know that it has got to feel go to make to the 60+mpg!

Now for my tank info:

This was highway/interstate driving with Cruise Control doing the speed limit. From Myrtle Beach to Lexington and from Lexington to Carowinds(Scarowinds)/Charlotte, NC and back. Only used FAS when approaching stoplights. What a sad tank

388.6miles
8.9 gallons
43.6 mpg

Well, this is what the speed limit and CC will get you on the other hand I did fill up for $2.35 a gallon this morning. I can't wait until it drops below $2 then getting that mpg won't be bad at all

Good questions and like most things it is relative.

Terrain and weather is going to vary between people considerably here is mine:

1/4 of the trip was speeds of 55mph - flat - heavy rain - 10/24/2008 - 74 degrees
1/4 of the trip was speeds of 60mph - hills - heavy rain - 10/24/2008 - 74 degrees
1/2 of the trip was speeds of 70mph - hills - night - 10/25/2008 - 50 degrees

Mods:
Tires at 65psig - now with 43K on them and a patch in 2 of the tires.
short ram intake(not sure is this is any good yet)
FAS switch(didn't use much)
Skunk2 short shifter
0w20 mobile1 synthetic oil 50% oil life left

wow we 44mpg!


I made a 115 mile trip today with P&G and FAS the entie 230 miles. By the time I got home, maybe 400 clutch pokes later my left knee was blown out. Never again!

55 to 40mph Because of heave traffic go the 40mph aroung 60% of the cycles and the reast 45 to 50.

I had a 63mpg avg AM with no wind
but faught a +5 -10 mph head all the way home and ended up 59 on SG

228 miles
3.936gal
58mpg

I logged it on clean

Bummer about your knee; I hope it feels better soon.

I don't have a chance to try P&G; there is too much traffic on my daily commute. People seem to be frustrated enough because I'm driving 60. I do FAS on a couple of long downhill stretches. My weekly fills (almost always at the same station) have been a pretty solid 44.5mpg.

Paul, has found the secret!

Go Paul! I feel you on the P&G for such a long trip. I attempted it two tanks ago; it was only 170miles, I P&Ged for about 80 of it and said the hell with that because it was a 3.5hr one way trip.

Three new update for the latest fill-ups:
Gallons Miles Tank's MPG
9.889 450.80 45.58600
9.810 427.70 43.59837
8.695 397.80 45.75043
That's 26 straight 40+ mpg tanks in a row now.

In general I filled up one click past the shut off, used no A/C, did a bit of drafting, kept my speed around 55 mpg, some coasting downhill with the engine off, engine off coasting up and waited at long traffic lights with normal tire pressure.

Just adding up the total gallons and miles gives: 383.926 gallons over 15508.80 equals 40.39529 miles per gallon.

Finding the mean mpg of the fillups listed above gives 40.35371 mpg with an error on the mean of 0.5610306.

Either way it looks like the lifetime average for my Fit is 40.4+-0.6 mpg.

My CleanMPG chart keeps looking nicer all the time:


Fitting the mpg as a function of the number of days (x) I've owned the Fit to

mpg = a*(1.0-b*exp(c*x))

gives an estimate the maximum mpg (a in the above equation) of my Fit (the mpg as x tends towards infinity). Based on the mpg data I've recorded the fit gives a limiting mpg of 47+-3 with a chisquare of 1.1.

Not bad for a daily commute with over 3000 feet of climbing.

So Jealous

Hey everyone, I gotta say that I envy all those getting 45+ mpg on their Fits. I filled by tires to 40 psi (33 psi originally) and did some P&G when I got the chance and came out to 39.4 mpg. Now nearly all my driving is city and I never hit the highway but there is a stretch where the limit is 40 mph for about 5 miles. That's where I try to P&G. Before the P&G and tires inflated, I got 36.1 mpg. My car now has 1,000 miles on it so it's relatively new.

Any advice from the pros? Should I be contempt?

you won't see "good" mileage until after the first oil change

the OEM/factory original oil has molybendium (sp?) and additional additives for proper break in that do reduce FE a fair amount.

Got some tech on that? AFAIK moly & zinc are higher to reduce friction and scuffing, so I don't see how they could reduce FE. An engine that isn't broken in will be less efficient, but I don't know how much any modern engine REALLY has to break in any more.

that's just based on heresay from other honda sites. i have seen a slight improvement in economy since my first oil change, but it's cretainly not significant

and i do agree, other than the rings sealing, there isn't anything that get's "broken in" with ANY engine

One must factor in learning to drive a new car, every car is different and some learn better/quicker than others. Not to mention the techniques, if one is new to hypermiling(mild or extreme).

I suspect the key to your case might be that you're doing almost all of your driving is in the city. The 45+ mpg you see are mostly due to commutes that are more highway driving and less city driving. In my case, I make a commute of about 38 miles every morning and every evening. I do about 30 miles of each trip on the highway.

My guess is that you'll see the most increase is you get in the habit of turning off the engine at long stop lights, turning off the engine and costing to stops and things like that. It will take some time to figure out when the lights are long enough to make turning off the engine (and then turning it back on) something that saves fuel.

I do about 70% / 30% City Highway and all I could muster up was 38MPG and that is not enjoying the car but rather driving like a I'm 90 years old.

Re the Moly content in our Fits factory fill..... It's not an additive, it IS the piston skirt coating liberating.

If you had accurate records you would see the FE on the Fit changes little even after 20k miles. What changes almost always is you skill at driving and that results in better FE.

This is not typical but shows the point. What happened in Sept? I learned how to do it better, that's all. Same car, same fuel and same driver.

MT (pre 2009) Fits can get close to 70mpg if you try real hard.
