Car Overfilled With Motor Oil By Dealership

Has anyone else had this problem? Could this be causeing my consistently dropping MPG?

How far is it overfilled?

Yes mileage goes down when it has too much oil due to the crank whipping up the oil.

drive the car around and if the oil on your dipstick is foamy then they made it way too high.. a little high is okay

If it is way high it can do damage, but it is likely not THAT overfilled.

Yeah, excessive oil can be bad. Low oil pressure I think? Don't always trust the dealers. Check the dipstick.

I just did my oil change today. The dealers way OVERTIGHTENED the drain bolt and the oil filter. Nearly killed myself getting them off.

That is definitely true, all of the time. On my Nissan Altima, they have put in the wrong amount of oil 3 times...too little. This can also be very serious....ours is a 3.5 L, and they must think they are doing a 2.5 L without checking. I have had to complain each time, and I have received the next oil change free on two of those occasions.

We have not had our first oil change on our Fit as yet....still under 5000 miles. But I will definitely be checking my oil level immediately after the oil change.

Well I checked it again. It really isn't as bad as I thought it was. It can stand to lose half a quart for sure. I wish I would have realized this before getting upset with the service department manager.

. Oh well this has taught me to check it everytime I get an oil change.

My car is slightly low on transmission fluid. I'm wondering if it's normal. I do use the paddle shifters a lot.

Not when the crank is whipping the oil. The y8 was terrible at this. I'd get at least 5 mpg better if the car was half stick instead of 1/4" over full.

using the paddle shifters more or less does nothing different internally with the transmission. Instead of the ECU telling the tranny to shift you are...

Not to mention if the level of oil is so high that the crank is hitting it, it creates foam and air bubbles. If these air bubbles are captured in your oil pump collector, it's the same effect as running low/out of oil. I have seen spun bearings from having severely overfilled oil.

Too much crankcase oil = blown seals. Big problem. With an overfill go right to the dealer and tell him. You will be saving him from replacing all the seals in the engine. He will also have a chat with the fellow who serviced you car. ;o)
