Eco FITFit for Fuel! Got the low mileage blues? Care to share a 40+mpg tale? Automatic vs. Manual? Come here to discuss topics on fuel efficiency and other Green Topics
How did you do that?!! The most I have gotten from one tank is 320 mi and the fuel light was on for about 14 of those miles... I have had the Fit for 16 months and have not topped that using 91 octane fuel.
Good question.......yes, the first thing I noticed is that my arm bumps up against the arm rest when shifting and it REALLY annoyed me at first, but I realized I would just have to get used to it. The advantage is that the arm rest is longer than I thought and so is more useful since you can move your arm around on it in different positions on long trips. I wish it had been designed so that it sits further back in the cabin, though, so it doesn't interfere with shifting.
Having said all that, I got used to it very quickly and I don't even notice the problem any more, I just shift with my arm in a different position to accommodate the arm rest being in the way. The pluses outweigh this one minus so I still recommend it highly. The alternative is get the JDM full console arm rest which costs three times what this one does.

Thanks David! I keep going back and forth between the Zeta and JDM version. Cost difference is huge! I wonder if the JDM has the same "elbow" issue? I guess I will ask a "Freakfitter" who has purchased one and who has a MT.

I have the JDM console, and it doesn't bother me while shifting. I must note, however, that I am 6' 4" and I have my seat all the way back, so that my elbow rests ontop of the sliding cushion. I don't have any need to slide the cushion forward.

Something about this car has inspired me to become more organized than I have ever been in my life regarding mileage. I'm a guy who practically never balances his checkbook and here I am keeping, in minute detail, mileage records on my new-ish Fit. Go figure.
Here, for your edification, is my first collection of data. I got the car in mid-July.
My habits: I keep my cruising speed on the highway between 60-62 MPH, usually. Most of my city driving consists of short (4 mile-ish) bursts on the freeway, combined with urban, traffic light negotiating- with a rough 50/50 split between the two. When I say "mixed" city driving, that tends to be this sort of city driving, combined with 10 mile stretches on state highways that where I stop at traffic lights ever 2 miles or so.
I try to shift between 2,500 and 2700 RPM, though, when accelerating along an on-ramp, I'll go up to 3,000+ RPM. I generally go into 5th gear at around 40 MPH. I'd say it takes me about 4 seconds between shifts when shifting from a dead stop.
I do a moderate amount of coasting-to-a-stop (while in gear), but nothing that would seem unusual to other drivers on a regular city street.
I do use A/C when temperatures become slightly uncomfortable, but I blast the A/C for a while and then shut it off. This generally amounts, in these sweltering summer months, to the A/C being on about 20% of the time. (This includes compressor use for defogging.)
I never shut off the engine while driving. I will, on the freeway, very occasionally will draft a semi (to the side) for a few minutes if the opportunity presents itself (unless this entails me going faster than 60MPH).
I don't have cruise control. This is a 2008 Pearl Blue base FIT.
The results:
Fill Date ------ Gallons -- ODO -- MPG -- Tire PSI -- Comments
25-Jul-08 ---- 7.762 -- 274.8 -- 35.40 -- 32 --- First filll, 6 mi on purchase, 80% mixed city, lots of traffic, 25% A/C
6-Aug-08 ---- 7.589 -- 292.3 -- 38.52 -- 32 --- Mostly HWY, 60MPH cruise, 20% AC
6-Aug-08 ---- 4.622 -- 186.0 -- 40.24 -- 32 --- Road Trip All HWY, Bike Rack on Back, 300 lb inside, 60 MPH, Some drafting, 10% A/C
11-Aug-08 --- 8.527 -- 354.8 -- 41.61 -- 32 --- Road trip Mostly HWY, 50% Bike rack, some dirt roads, 55-60MPH cruise, rolling hills, 20% A/C
11-Aug-08 --- 9.381 -- 373.3 -- 39.79 -- 32 --- Road trip Mostly HWY, Bike rack, 55-65MPH cruise, 1hr mostly idle wait at border, 20% A/C
24-Aug-08 --- 9.224 -- 369.8 -- 40.09 -- 32 --- 70% mixed city commute (state hwys), 60MPH cruise, 25% A/C
Topped off tank before and after fill to get the max distance. P&G from 45-35 on local hwy and P&G from 52-45 on interstate. Shifted at 2K.
Used 13.2 gallons = 65.4mpg
I guess I could of safely driven another 52 miles if it holds 14gallons. I just wasn't sure how much it holds and how accurate the fuel gauge was reading. I wasn't willing to run out of gas...... (I chickened out!)

Thanks for the info! It's funny how I will sit in the car and the space for the armrest appears so small - yet viewing pictures of the JDM console it looks like a perfect fit. I am thinking if the armrest is not too high - it could work. Is there a height adjustment of any kind?
Sg error would of been small so I rolled out the correction from last fill.
It's -.7% now. That's promising as the only reason I'm over filling is to get some consistent data.
560 miles
12.58g
44.5mpg right at my avg
That's 41 miles after E light.
I know I have 2 gals till fumes on mine so I can say mine holds 13.7 gal from see it in the neck till bone dry
55mph and under
2k shift
some P&G w and W/o FAS
kill eng at most stops
how do you shift at 2k and expect to be even moving? lol this isnt a torque beast or anything
I was wondering the same thing. I tried that, following the suggestion, after I asked a few pages back, but I was barely even moving forward, when I had to slam in the clutch, and jump into 2nd.
I thought are tanks are 10.8 gallons. How are u guys saying 12.5 and 13.2 gallons in ur tanks. I average i would say on my 08 MT 35-38mpg. On the trip from CA to FL i average 45mpg i belive.

225 with about 3/8ths of a tank left. I was at 185 at the halfway mark, which is higher than usual for me.

Now that is more realistic post then some, I can't be bothered with worrying about gas mileage in my fit. It's more fun to drive if I don't consume myself with MPG and it still is consistantly over 40 mpg and that is with 60, 65, and dare I say it 70 MPH. THE HORROR!!!!! :-)
It's just a fun little car, I'm glad I bought one.
did you not see that he said he still gets over 40 mpg???? thats still freaking great.
Wow! This is very exciting... 38.8 MPG...on my first tank!!
I have a 08 Fit Sport 5MT I picked up a few days ago brand new. Now it has around ~400 miles. I come from the Evo world (I've owned a 330 WHP Evo IX SSL for about 2 years) and anything north of 20 MPG is simply astonishing to me! I did a few hypermiling techniques on this first tank of gas in the Fit. 60% HWY/ 40% CITY. Limited P&G, lots of FAS, never exceeded 55 MPH, after the first 100 miles increased tire pressure from 32PSI to 44PSI.
I bet I could break 40 MPG in no time. I'm debating whether or not to order a ScanGauge. May not need it, but still a neat tool.

No that's the safe fill spec.
If you don't mind risking damage to the tank EPA vent system it will take 3 to 4 more gals after the pump shuts off.
It's not easy to do that.

Oh ok thanks for clearing things up for me. Now i see how u guys are geting freakish mpg. Like i said i get around 33-38 mpg with about 70% city and 30% highway. I just shift at 3000 RPMS and try to keep it below 60 mph. So far so good these cars are great
