This is what I was told about the $1000 rebate program. The rebate started at 6.5L/100 KM or less.

The only sub-compact gasoline car that qualified was the Toyota Yaris at 6.3L/100 KM (MT) and 6.5L/100 KM (AT).

The Honda Fit is 6.6 L/100 KM and just missed out.

Here is the big kicker, only one Toyota Yaris qualifies - the bare bones, three door hatchback with a manual or auto transmission. As soon as you add A/C, five doors or any model with some options the car can not reach those mileage numbers and therefore does not qualify.

Do you really think the Federal government would have a whole whack of gasoline burning cars (lots of diesel and hybrid cars) on this list? They would have to give back some dollars out of the pot and they don't like doing that. =)

pod, i don't know where you got this information from, but actually, all versions of the yaris qualify, a/c, auto, sedan, hatch, 3-dr, 5-dr.
the only version of the fit that almost qualifies is the manual at 6.6 L/100km

I believe that the only Mini to qualify was the 6 speed manual. At least that is what was indicated the day of the announcement, but I don't see the Mini on the current Transport Canada list.

The Toyota Corolla also qualified.

None of the qualifiers are as much fun to drive as the Fit.

i think honda is trying to put some positive spin on this,

first of all, all versions of the yaris qualify, that includes versions with abs and sedans with side and curtain airbags, manual or auto.

so does honda really want us to believe that airbags and abs systems on their vehicles are so heavy that they are having this huge impact on fuel economy?

i for one think they should be a bit more lenient with the rebate, but i guess the cut-off has to be somewhere.

the corolla is probably LEV as well as it is an older design, so i dont' think that factors.

plus, it is only the manual corolla and mini cooper that qualify.

The Corolla has better highway mileage because it's not so tall.

Honda Canada announces $1,000 rebate on 2007 Fit

CanadianDriver: Honda Canada announces $1,000 rebate on 2007 Fit and selected Civic models

Looks like instead of making a better car to meet the eligibility criteria, Honda Canada has chosen to match the subsidy - and make it a safety versus environment issue.

I would have preferred a more fuel efficient car, but I doubt they would have been able to change the specs just for the small Canadian market.

At least the car becomes a bit cheaper to buy.

What a suprise

I guess Exxon wanted $100 billion this year instead of just $99.5
