Autoblog reports Toyota is finally bringing the 5 door Yaris to the US next year. I still like the 2 gen Fit better, but this model will probably sell well.
I like this alot more then any current Yaris model on sale in the US right now. Still a Yaris though, the Fit still pwns it!

I still like the look of the Yaris 5 door. They have been on sale here in Canada since '06. I was looking at them...but decided the Fit was more fun to drive and had more cargo room. Still liked the Yaris though.

My wife loves the look of the Yaris. I didn't like them much at all. Then we drove one before I got the Fit and the handling sucked! The amount of road noise was ridiculous. And now neither of us like the Yaris. The 5 door looks a little better than the sedan though.
well i admit this doesnt look bad at all, but as i've heard the current fit already surpasses the quality of the yaris, so there is no competition between the upcoming fit and the yaris 5dr. Unless you're a Toyota fan maybe, or u dont care about quality products

Well the Fit and Yaris aren't really even comparable because the Yaris is an actual sub-com economy car and costs $2,000-$4,000 less then the Fit. So I would expect the Fit to get higher marks on initial quality. But this doesn't mean the Toyota is a POS by any stretch of the imagination. I've got 80,000 miles on my '07 Yaris sedan and have not had a single thing break or fail. Nothing.

The new Yaris is an improvement, but I suspect it is still a full notch below the Fit in quality and driving/handling fun.
I test-drove the 2007 Yaris thoroughly and just didn't like it. It still had the Toyota personality that (though not unpleasant) was not as satisfying as my Fit or 2 previous Civics.
I still think even the 2007-2008 Fit looks better than this, and the 2009 Fit is even better. :)
i know you think we are biased and all but the yaris is just not a great car, i understand it's cheaper and all but there has to be limits to how cheaply a car is built. The Fit was a big jump down for me at first because i was used to driving my mom's BMW when i had my permit, but I now think it's decent. 80,000miles and no failage is fine. But super economy is something i'd rather not have to live with. The Fit is fun and sporty and it just feels good to be in, could you say the same for your yaris?
I don't understand why anyone would mount the gauges in the center of the dash.
Nobody but the driver needs to see them and having to glance at them by shifting your eyes even a little bit sideways doesn't seem nearly as safe as having them right in front of you.

Yeah I can say the same about my Yaris. My Yaris S is no race car but it handles great for a 100ish bhp car. It's got sporty looks yet I have taken it on 2,000 mile road trips hauling as much gear as I used to fit in my Cherokee.
But when it comes to looks it's all relative anyhow. The Honda crowd hate the Yaris' looks and the Yaris crowd says the Fit looks like a minivan. That's why they drive Fits and we drive Yaris. The bottom line for me, as an old fart of 39 who drives for a living, is 1) mileage, 2) reliability, 3) price. I average between 35-43 MPG, Toyota is legendary for their reliability and my S was fully loaded for almost the same price the of the base Fit.
The Fit is a great car. That's what brought me to this site was doing research on the 2009. But to say the Yaris (remember $2-$4K less) is a cheap low quality car is just, well, being the stereo-typical Honda enthusiast.

It takes about 5 minutes to get used to and it's actually safer because it gets the cluster out from behind the wheel.
