I just came across this DIY - thank you for this information! My AC has been smelling kinda funny and what do you know, I just checked the filter, and it's downright nasty. Thank you for saving me money! This post should be stickied.
Thanks for the info. Even though it's going to be a while before it will need to be changed, at least I know where it is. My FA5 is in the same location and just driving 12,500 it was pretty dirty.
For some reason mine is even dirtier than the air filter. I was surprise how dirty it is for a 10 months old car 12k miles). It looks like I need to change it at least once a year.
Here's a source for these on eBay- fast service on my order. There is an instruction sheet for installation packed with each filter with photos of the Fit installation. Buy It Now price $11.95 (I bought 2 for lower shipping cost). Ships via USPS.
These TYC cabin filters can be got for $7.10 at Mirrors Lights Cabin Air Filters Radiators Condensers Fans. We have two 2008 Fits and I just bought six filters. With shipping and insurance it was under $56 total, or just a little over $9 each shipped. A good deal.

Thanks for the new source! I'll buy here next time.

Thanks for the pointer. With this price I can afford to change it every 6 months.
Has anyone tried running without the filter in place? I rather like fresh, unfiltered air, even if it does have pollen (and I can hit the recirculate switch quickly if I see a cloud of dust ahead of me). I loved my father's '78 Accord vent, which was so direct to the outside that you'd occasionally get snowflakes blowing through. I'd drive with the window down, but that's too noisy on the highway.
Pretty much. Use the same instructions to get the glovebox to drop down, and then when you look behind it you'll see a rectangular box with tabs on the sides. That's the filter tray. Gentle pressure on these tabs inwards will let you pull the tray out, and then the filter itself pops out from this.
Does anyone happen to know whether the filter is upstream or downstream of the AC evaporator? If the former, it's probably helping to keep the evaporator from getting clogged, and so I'll probably leave my filter in. If the latter, I might leave the filter out, as you get much more air our of your dash vents without it, and the air does seem a bit fresher.

Reason: corrected direction of tab pressure
