For those who change their own oil, do you guys use jacks and jackstands or ramps. I have a set of jackstands and a jack, but am afraid of the car falling when I am under it. Also, the jack points are kinda tiny.

I am thinking of getting a pair of ramps for oil changes and using the jackstands to rotate the tires.

i used both........

my 2 jacks are the giant ones from Costco.......

just make sure you use your E-brake and a set of wheel chocks......

i usually put a set of spare rims with tires laying flat next to the jacks.......

just in case the jacks failed....the rims/tires will catch the car from crushing me......

 

Depends on my mood.
If I am going to rotate tires I use 4 stands.
If I'm just changing oil I use ramps.

 

I use my own home made ramp whenever I do the oil change on my Z. I haven't change the oil yet on the Fit but I am sure it should be easier since it is not lowered at all. Here is a picture of what I made. ***Z in the background isn't mine***

 

i use ramps. for my lowered cars i made a extension. very easy.

jackstands are fine, but it's too much hassle for lowered cars.
first you gotta put the car on a pair of boards (or those LDS
takata ramps), so that you can get your low profile racing hydraulic
under the car... then jack up, then put the stands under the
car and do everything in reverse just to lower the car.

 

It seems like ramps are the way to go because of convenience.
The homemade ramps look awesome, but im gonna try to find a cheap pair to buy, before resorting to building some.

Anyone one ever drive off the end of the ramp (and are willing to admit it)?

As for rotating the tires, the jack points next to the wheels are too small to fit both the hydraulic jack and a jack stand. I wanna try finding a different spot to jack the car up.

 

If you do make one, here is a cheap way. Cost maybe about $10. And if you go to Home Depot, they can cut the board for you. Not sure about the other places

4X8 sheet of 3/4" OSB wood
1 1/4" Coarse Drywall screws or nails
I cut the OSB at work to these dimensions
2 4'x1'
2 3'x1'
2 2'x1'
2 1'x1'
4 2"x1' for stoppers on top.
Then you put 4 screws in each board.

hahahahahaha. too funny.

ive yet to do that. the rhino ramps you buy has a stop at the end
so you gotta be going pretty fast up that ramp to go over it.

 

Well I see it happen before...it was my cousin who drove right off the ramp after the oil change...hahaha it was funny....

I would go with a ramp...but for me I have to go with the jack b/c my ride is slammed and I have mugen lip too....

 

Ramps for sure! That and a Fumoto valve and I can do an oil change in 10 minutes with no mess.

For tire rotations, I use cinder blocks instead of jack stands. Cinder blocks won't tip over and have a larger surface for the car to sit on. Also, the stands dig into my driveway that I hate.

 

I think ramps are the best way to go, I never like getting under a car that is held up by anything less.... although it hasn't stopped me yet Scissor jacks FTW!
