Removing the lower climate control cover

I had a heck of a time removing the cover, following the directions in the iPod link instructions, pushing and prying at the clip from behind after removing the glove box.

It turns out there's an easy way:
1. Remove the screw (duh).
2. Insert a popsicle stick or similar gentle tool between the parts at the screw position.
3. Slide the tool to a point slightly right of center of the vent knob.
4. Lift the free end of the tool up to pry the right clip down and out.
5. Pull the left side down to release the left clip.

EDIT: For completeness, here's the plug to remove:

That makes it as easy as 1,2,3,4. Nice, now if you had only done step 5 the plug itself while you had it off.
Excellent photo how to.

As far as I can tell, the procedures linked to on this thread for disabling "A/C always on in defrost modes" do not apply to a Fit. They refer to controls on a Civic that don't exist on the Fit. So when someone figures out how the sequence works on the fit please post.

Looks like you're the only one with a Fit that it doesn't work with.

I see you made the photo DIY complete. Nice job kps.

<oops> didn't realize there were 5 more pages to the thread. I got kinda tired of the back and forth about why anyone would ever want to turn off the A/C while defrosting. anyway thanks for the thorough pictures & text.

KPS, thank you for the pictures and the shortcut!!

Took me less than 10 mins to do this (would have been 5 if I didn't have to eat the popsice to get the stick!!!)

heh, if this will devolve into bitching about HVAC problems, how about this one:

My 92 Civic Si had an auto shut off feature for the rear defroster, but my fit does not... WTF?

i left my rear defroster running for like 8 hours once because i forgot i turned it on for about 3 states LOL...

anyway, back to the topic, has anyone figured out that procedure to turn off the A/C with the defogger on?

EDIT: Oh, I found the pics... I should read more thoroughly next time :P

This is a great write-up, big thanks to KPS! The whole thing took about 5 minutes, because after unhooking the wires, I checked the results, hooked the wires back up to confirm that this is reversable, checked the results again, and then unhooked and taped the plug nearby to prevent rattles and buttoned everything up.

In my 1990 Metro, the A/C had to be added manually to defrost. In my 1998 Mirage, it was automatic, but the A/C light in the manual switch would come on when you selected defrost. I prefer the choice of adding A/C or not, sometimes I like to use the defrost vent settings for air circulation when I'm not looking for de-fog the windows.

I guess that this is my first official mod to my Fit.

Eric

Defrost A/C question

My owners manual says that the A/C turns on when in the defrost setting. Does this mean that the compressor is always running while in defrost setting? If so, is there a way to disable this? I don't t want my A/C compressor running all winter.

Thanks!

Thanks to everyone for this (especially for the pics, kps). I just got my fit, and it's been kinda humid up here in the NW, couldn't figure out why I wasn't getting better fuel mileage, even though the AC light wasn't on. You guys already saved me a bunch on gas.

I must have one of these broken fits, my AC doesn't turn on when I go to defrost unless the button's pushed (is the light supposed to automatically go on when you switch to defrost??) probably already answered in the past 5 pages, oh well. . .

Your AC is turning on when you go to defrost. You just don't know it because the light doesn't go on.
