ITB's

Would it be realistic to have ITB's on the L15a? Would the engine have to be tuned to support the throttle bodies, and what kind of power increase would you be looking at?

Ive thought about it, only because the OEM intake manifold would look sick with ITB's.

Of course it can be done. A lot of money will need to be invested. Adding ITB's would increase air delivery dramatically and the addition fuel/tune will overall make more hp and torque.

Like I said a good amount of money might need to be spent. Factory we have the DriveBy Wire. So youd have to rip all that out and run cables. Then of course the fabrication of the 4 TB's, a fuel rail, stand alone, tune.

Do you think that the stock throttle body is really that restrictive? Is the factory cam and porting capable of that much additional flow. I would think that the ITB performance increase would be less than the various currently available forced induction systems. At this point, the ITBs sound more expensive, being a completely one-off project and having to replace so much related stuff.

the whole idea of itb's is to not resort to forced induction.. and shouldnt be close to a turbo or super kit in price

ITB'S are awesome I had a set of TWM's on my GSR before I went to boost! If I could go to them like my buddys still do on there B series motors I would on my single again. They are using the home made version tho with the ITB's from a gsxr, and yes they pull sooo much better and let alone the sick sound!!! If I could get my hands on them I would again no doubt.. And by the way checked with TWM and no,no plans as of yet

That's cool. I looked up ITB kits and they seemed to be around $2k without the ECU and a modded ECU seems to run around $500 for a re-flash. I figured that custom fabrication was going to eat up the difference to get to the $3.5k - $4k turbo price.

Like I said, ITBs would NOT be cheap. And since this motor is new there will be a lot of bugs that need to be worked out. Would be pretty sick. The OEM aluminum pipes (after the plastic collector) are in the perfect place for them. Even a nice little scoop could be made in the hood.

As for the head and cam. The head and cam is designed for long life and low fuel consumption, not so much power. Its only a matter of time till someone pulls apart the US spec motor and makes massive power with headwork and a cam.

I think that it is all about what you want. If you want something quick and to the point, boost is good. But if you want to build something that screams "All Motor" then ITB's are the way to go. I would get them as I have had a few boosted cars...I would like to see what I could do on crazy high compression all motor setup. It is just the individual's goals.

No use for them on a stock engine. It would have to be built

While the idea of massive power is intrigueing, I'm a little disappointed by the sound myself. It sounds good, but not 4K good. I mean my A-spec CAI and DC header sounds about the same as that thing. Could it be because he is using a GD1? Doesnt that thing have a 1.3 liter engine?

i think the amount of custom one off parts would make it about the same as a turbo or supercharger kit

I know this thread is pretty old, but has anyone thought of using the dbw itb's off of a CBR600RR? and does anyone know any place where you find them for a decent price?

Really though building the itb's is the easy part, converting dbw to cable is the hard part

The other thing with that GD1 is those itb's are made for 4AGE silvertop high revving 1.6L, so they're probably way too big for the little 1.3L, and i just checked a couple hours ago and that itb setup (if you want it) is going for $280 shipped right now.

ITBs

Strange, I was just looking at this thread. Any link to the ITB you're referring to?
TIA,

Stefano

the only way you are going to get any kinds of gains from an ITB set up is if you have crazy high compression.

..thought it would add some responsiveness... wouldn't it?

it'll definitely add responsiveness, anyways found these on ebay:

JDM Toyota Levin AE101 Throttle body Trueno AE111 AE86:eBay Motors (item 350246771707 end time Sep-29-09 19:34:03 PDT)

JDM 4AGE AE101 SILVERTOP ITB 20VALVE Corolla GTS AE111:eBay Motors (item 350249762674 end time Oct-07-09 03:59:11 PDT)

for these to work you'd still have to convert to a cable throttle and get some kind of programable ecu, but you don't need a massive compression ratio, the 4A-GE 20V engine that these are from only has a stock CR of 10.5:1 which is pretty much the same as our engines.

jdm fit has a wired throttle so you would just need to switch the ecu's to eliminate the dbw.

the way it would have to be done is a set off a kawasaki zx-14 the are dbw but the power increase would only be about 15hp max.

though im a believer in doing what you want no matter the cost, i dont see enough gains put out by these to do it. i have already chatted with toda and twm about maybe setting this up and it is around 6 grand to get it fabbed to my car. and then you would have to worry about wiring in the dbw.

too much of a headache for me, but you can attempt it if you want.
