Replaced shifter bushings

Me and my friend got bored today and decided to check out how to make a short shifter or anything of the sort for the fit. Ive hated the muddy feel of the shifter since i got it and decided to have him lathe up some bushings for it and also to see if we could work out some spacers and an extension for the shift linkage. Considering we only had a manual lathe and mill at our disposal we couldnt quite make the extension like we were hoping, so we decided instead of wasting time to make spacers with no shortened shift, well replace the rubber bushings between the shifter frame and the body of the car. About 3 hours later they snapped right in, put it in the car, and finally no more soft shifting, its smooth and positive now. You can feel the gears engaging instead of feeling a soft mushy thing..... He made the bushings out of aluminum but we also had nylatron (sp?) and a plastic to try with, but im happy with the aluminum.

If you know what you are doing making the extension for shorter shift is a piece of cake and can be fabricated with just a lathe, drill bit, and a tap set in less time than it takes to remove the shifter to get at the end. If you and your friends couldn't make a simple round extension with a couple of holes tapped maybe this is a project beyond your skills. And the price is about $35.00 if your look around on ebay.

its more of if we were to extend the shifter we would do it right and not just drill it in, at the time we didnt have the machines to make what we wanted, we agreed if im not happy with the turnout we can take the dimensions and fab the extensions at his workplace where he has access to cnc equipment and could easily mill the piece in 10 mins, but im happy

Pics?????

I had done this on my Mirage and loved the way it felt. The shifter was very firm and once in gear didn't move around in the gate as well as in neutral there was very little movement.

You getting a similar response for doing this? If so I surely will be doing it in the short term because it is taking some getting used to going from the Mirage to the Fit.
