DIY catch can

found this on honda tech and thought id post it here
http://www.honda-tech.com/showthread.php?t=2802115

Well I made a catch can out of Walmart and Home Depot Products.

WALMART

1x Silver Ash Soap Dispenser - $10

Home Depot

2x 1/2 in fitting - $1.77
1x 1/2 in Tubing - $12
1x Pack of 3/8-7/8 Hose Clamps - $6

Note: I bought another part i might need at HD but I willbe returning it cuz I found a better way.

Already had Teflon Threading tape and RTV Silicone.

I got the soap dispenser took the screw on dispenser off and was thinking how i can use the top for my catch can. THen i thought "that'd be tite if the oring that was in my old b20 head for my pcv would fit in this top!" Well WTF do you know it did perfectly.

(ill get more pics tomorrow)

Then I drilled holes for the 1/2 in fittings i got from HD, threaded the crap outta them with teflon tape and screwed them suckers in and put RTV Silicone around the fittings gonnna let sit over night.

I also took the bottom off the dispenser , cause inside was plastic. And the top holding my PCV was part of that plastic so i couldnt eliminate it, and that will also sit over night.

I had to RTV silicone the top as well cause air was leaking from the top, then i wrapped it with teflon, so it doesnt move around for whatever reason.

I didnt take a bunch of pics cause im tired, Also changed my nephew transmission. SO im beat, here is my finished product.

Ill post pics of it after i mount it somewhere in my cluster fawked engine bay...

I just happened to be on ebay and saw your post switching back and forth from ff.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but the advantage of a catch can is that you get the air pressure from the engine but without the residues?

Basically with a breather filter you lose the vacuum effect... i've seen someone who did his catch can with a compressor filter, that's pretty convenient since the holes are already taped, the only bad thing is that it's really small... and if i remember correctly we sell this for 45$ at my job... as for the water bottles suggested by the OP it's under 10$...
btw redrumm did'nt you sell your Fit or a s2k?

Glad to know your still a Fitfreak! As for the catch can i wanted to install this instead of a breather filter, but lacked the time to get on it, as i had many other things in mind... and your right, making your own is a lot better, and hopefully cheaper. I can't imagine myself spending a 100$ for this mod... but now that you posted about this i really want to start thinking about it!

Having a boosted car myself (not the Fit but a Dodge SRT-4). The ebay catch can's are garbage. Infact most of the catch can's that don't have some sort of mesh/filtering material (media) inside them suck. They leak, even when you don't "see" it or "hear" it. Run a boost leak test and you will see (if of course your boosted). I've ran many boost leak tests and seen pretty much every sort of catch can out there including homemade ones. Majority I've come across leak, even including some name brand ones like the Greddy unit.

You need pretty much a self-contained catch can. In otherwords one that doesn't have a breather filter on it, one that doesn't have a drain plug on it, and one that doesn't have a sight view tube on it. These are known "leak" culprits. Some with drain plugs don't leak but majority do. You want one with an "in" and an "out" ports and thats really it. Some even use a check valve between the system. I can take a picture of the one on my SRT-4 to give you an idea.

If your really on a budget, go to Lowe's or Home Depot and buy a air compressor water/air seperater. If it has a valve on the bottom, plug it. Remove the filtering system inside of the seperater. Buy I believe is 3/8" barb fittings for it and get some 3/8" hose and some hose clamps. There you go a cheap oil catch can that won't leak as long as it remains sealed correctly. I will try to take a picture of one tomorrow as I have my old one sitting around.

i'll beat him to the punch with the one on my ptgt... do the following with a good pcv valve on the vc end, and a check valve on the intake mani side (if you're boosted):

Here's a link to the air separator
Husky 1/4 In. Air Compressor Filter - HDA70403AV at The Home Depot
The good thing is that barb fittings fit directly... but it does'nt hold much oil... as for taking out the filter element, idk... i've seen people who used this and left the filter inside with pretty good results...
I've started thinking about a lot of ways to do it, but the fact that i don't have material to weld, is a pretty big obstacle. I like the water bottle, but it's way to tall for my taste, although it's only 5$

14.95 shipped! and it's small with no bracket to hang it up with. 1/4" in/outlets.

what is your thoughts Apex, is it worth it on our N.A. 1.5L ?
