HID conversion

Hi there,

I have a newbie question so please bear with me. I'm planning to install an HID projector lens on my GD1 but I'm not sure of what HID kit to buy. My OEM bulb is H4 12v 60/55w, however, most HID kits in the market are using 35w. My question is, do I need to look for an HID kit that is 55w as well? Will there be any issues if I buy the 35w HID kit?

thanks in advance.

depending on the projector, 55w might get too hot and melt the housing

My OEM bulb is 55w already. If i use a 55w hid ballast then would there be an issue? I heard HID bulbs are cooler than halogen too.

Most hid kits out there are using 35w ballasts but also using the same 12v. Would there be an issue if I use a 12v 35w hid kit?

Wattage is not a good comparison between a Arc light technology (HID) and a Halogen.

NO Hid kit is going to work well in the stock housing, they are a free form reflector design which means with an HID insert they don't control the light correctly. You need something like this:

to do it right.

There are several manufacturers but to do it right you'll have to remove and dismantle the headlight assemblies to install the correct projector lens units.

YMMV/My soapbox... If folks in our hobby don't start pricing themselves on lighting someone else will start doing it for us.. Realize that if you have illegal headlights you can have your car impounded roadside and they can force you to take it to "an authorized installer/dealer" to get your car back.. Not that likely but the rulebook is NOT in your favor..

I forgot to mention that I will be using proper hid projector beams and will be opening my headlight assembly. I am aware that you can't just simply replace an OEM bulb with an HID bulb without properly modifying the headlight unit.

Back to my original question, will there be an issue if i use a 35W hid ballast?

OOPS I forgot to answer that part.. the Lumens of output for a 35W HID and a standard Halogen bulb are very close, I'd validate the current draw of the ballast after install, and if its more than the stock bulb I'd consider a relay and a straight feed from the battery.

They even sell kits that have a small bracket and pair of relays that you just plug the stock headlight connector in to and then the harness from the relays to the HID ballast.

I did ours using projectors and used 35w. They were absolutely fine. Give excellent light output.
