Arrow My Custom Do-It-Yourself Cargo Mat!

I just created and installed a custom cargo mat for my Fit. I started with these interlocking tiles, which come in several colors:

I connected them and cut them to fit the cargo floor and both seat backs:

I attached large strips of velcro (the hook side) to the backs of the pieces for the seat backs:

The velcro will hold them in place, even when the seats are up (either one or both):

I chose not to put the tiles on the "flaps," although I seriously thought about it. I was afraid the tiles would interfere with the movement of the flaps.

So, what do you think?

Details

I got these here. They're a harder plastic, but you can also get similar tiles in a softer, more rubber-like material. (Just do a Google search for "interlocking tiles.") I got these because they were less expensive than most, and being plastic, they're lighter weight. Since I wanted to velcro them to the seat backs, I was afraid the heavier tiles might not work. I went with the blue because I thought the Fit could use a little color--all the black inside is boring! (And the tiles are at least close to Blue Sensation Pearl!) They also come in black, silver, beige, white, and red. I've also seen other sites that have orange and purple. Obviously, you can't go wrong with black, but to each his own!

I bought 20 square feet of tiles (20 tiles at 12" x 12") just to make sure I had enough. I had one full tile and several pieces left over. I didn't buy any edges or corners; I just cut them to size and fit them in place. Because I was going to have to cut some of the tiles anyway, I didn't think the edges and corners would be that helpful--they only work on an uncut edge. The tiles are 1/2" thick, so if you put them on the cargo floor INSIDE the raised-up strip along the sides, the top of the tiles matches up with those raised-up strips.

This is awesome. For maximum protection, I might glue a plastic or silicone sheet to the bottom to keep liquid from seeping through the cracks in the tiles. (Don't ask. I do a lot of gardening, okay?)

I just got a new 2016 fit and I was thinking about shelling out for the standard cargo mat, but you've made me think again
