How do you find the right wheels?

I'm thinking about getting some new wheels for my 08' SSM fit.

I know what I want visually, but I have no idea where to start or what to look for when it comes to size/offset and shit like that.

I have painted black stocks right now, I'm fine with their size, but I want something a little cleaner.

How important is offset?

Can I just find a new set that's the same size as stock (15'' i think) and throw them on there?

Will i have to get them balanced?

Will my stock tires fit the new wheels?

any help will be appreciated

Try visiting Discounttiredirect.com and tirerack.com to view the wheels visually and 'on your car'.

Offset is key and 45 mm is best. discounttiredirect has listed offset for years so you can query 4x100 BC before checking if the dish clears. That you'll have to get info from seller or that wheel website for fitment.
tirerack has recently listed offset. And 7" rim width is a good choice for all Fit tires.

205/50x15, 205/45x16 and 195/40x17 are good choices for tires on matching wheels of course

you need to make sure that they are the right width

Some good places to start are:
Tire Rack
Discount Tire Direct
Or even look through the Fit pictures area and see if you like any of those wheels, if so look them up (TR and DTD both can tell what size the stock wheels are) and if they are the correct size you can probably use the stock tires again, although if you want to improve your performance you may want to go for a stickier tire IMO

Also offset is critical

Width:
Anything up to 7.0" is fine although people here run 17x7.5" wheels with no problem too.

Offset:
As Mahout says, +45mm is the magic number. Higher offset will also work; stock wheels are +50 or so. Any lower and it's a gamble, with your rear fenders rubbing on the wheels at stake. +42mm is hit-or-miss depending on the wheel, and +40mm can be just plain mean. I know a few +40 offset wheels have worked but they're more the exception than the rule.

I'm not sure if you can combine narrow width and a relatively low offset and still come out with no rubbing.

Lastly, try the fitment before buying or committing. You'll want the wheels to clear the front brake calipers. There's a little flange on the front calipers where the center of the wheel can snag on. If you can free-rotate the mounted wheel and don't run into any snags you should be fine.

HTHs and good luck.

P.S. Get aftermarket lugnuts for your new wheels too. The stock lugnuts don't seat as well on aftermarket wheels because of the difference in seat shape. Aftermarket wheels have tapered lugnut seats, stock lugnuts are ball-headed.

Rota makes a KNOCK-OFF thats rather inexpensive, I would rather save the money for the real thing...but hey its your money and car.

You may be able to find a used set on Honda-tech or NWP

I'll look around for some sw388's, what would be another good brand to look at? I don't want cheap shit but i also don't want to drop 2-3 grand on wheels

i'm looking to spend $1500 max

yes, flush with the fenders...

spacers would be used if you do not want them flush, right?

Nope other way around. Spacers will push the fenders out towards the fender.
I have +24 on an 8" wheel and Im super flush with the rear fender. Do i rub?? Yeah but i've rolled my fenders and chose a smaller tire size to help minimize the rubbing.

Im sure some others will chime in and say that you cant run a +24 on a 8" wide wheel and this and that...They told me that when I had my old wheels 7" wide w/ a +13.

$1500 is a good budgeted amount. You should be able to check out VWvortex, Honda-tech or NWP for some very nice "real" wheels for about that price.

$1,500 is a good budget to get some real deal wheels. I picked up my Volks off here used for $1,200. Just for reference my wheels are 16X7 with a +42 offset. Tires are 205/45/16 Im dropped pretty low and only have problems with rubbing up front with big bumps and real hard cornering.

If you stay above a +42 offset and 205/45 tire I cant see you have any problems on stock suspension.

yes it takes special tools to mount/dismount tires so take it to a place like Tires plus and tell them you want the tires for the stock wheels mounted on the new wheels and balanced. Seeing you have a 08 your also going to have to find a solution for the TPMS whether that be you ignore the light or have the sceners transferred over to the new wheels, if they can be.
