Um i do believe the major reason oil is changed is because the additives in the oil start to break down, and the oil doesn't do its job as well. And oil viscosity does make a fuel mileage different.0w20 will give you a tiny bit better gas mileage than,say,20w50.And if you use a heavier oil (like 20w50) you lose a little power. But that wouldn't be a problem for any of use because we should all be using 5w20 like we're suppost to

My first change was at 6400 miles because we were leaving on a trip, but it was on track to say change at 8000 miles. The manual says change when the MM system warns you, or at least by the first year. I think 7500-8000 mile change is great. The 3-5k change is too often and wasteful. We've got good engines and good oils. Changing too often is wasting oil and time. The key is being regular and not missing it.

I was told by the dealership that the oil life depends on how you drive the car. So those people who drives on the highway alot, or they are just easy drivers, will have a longer oil life than those ppl who drive aggresively, or are constantly in bumper-to-bumper traffic.

This should explain why the oil life is different for everyone here.

oil change

I just got my FIT recently and I know it's time for an oil change (approx. 6500km). However, the digital meter shows that the oil life still has 40%. Should I go with what the digital meter indicates? or should I just change the oil every 6000km???

Used to own an intrepid and the I just sticked to every 6000km.

go with whatever you think is best, it's your car, some people will decide to go by the oil lilfe indicator, others may go more tradiotnal and stick to milage.

it's written 5w-20 in the user guide so you put 5w-20. point final.

You'll find the procedure in the user manual.

Dude, its 5W-20. Its written all over the place. The first 2-3 oil changes use regular, then go to synthetic.

I'm betting Honda would recommend 5-20 like it says on the Fit's oil cap or maybe I'm being too stupid about this, but if they're recommending 5-30, I really wish they wouldn't put 5-20 on the cap because that just makes it really confusing for people like me.

How does the maintance minder work?

I know it doesn't work off of mileage alone, but I would like to know how it actually works.

Does it have some sort of friction sensor?
Does it calculate the avg speed engine RPM and time?

BUMP...I'm curious about the technical side of this as well. Does it measure the oil viscosity constaintly?

Wow. Your dealership was talking out of its bottom. Which dealer was it?

Obviously your dealer hasn't read an owners manual which says, "Based on the engine operating conditions and accumulated engine revolutions, the onboard computer in your vehicle calculates the remaining engine oil life and displays it as a percentage".

do not trust the oil life indicator. it does not do an "in-car oil a-nalysis" to determine actual life of oil left. just keep paying attention to mileage and record every time you change it.

Generally, regular Honda oil lasts up to 5k miles on "severe" usage, 10k on "normal". Synthetic oils can go longer change intervals, but i usually keep it on a 5k basis.
