AJ Racing at the 2006 Super Street Time Attack!
AJ Racing takes second place in Micro-class at the 2006 Super Street Time Attack!
For those of you who are not familiar with the term time attack, time attack is also known as time trial. This term is commonly used in Japan for individual time trial events for motor vehicles that involve a vehicle running around the circuit in lieu of a qualifying lap. This concept is different from a race; the winner is determined by the fastest time around the lap. With the popularity of the tuner cars in North America, we have adapted to this concept.
After last year's success at time attack, we decided to attend again this year. Following the success of the S2000, which came first in its class last year, we have also been invited to the Micro class. This is the second year we have been invited to this event, and Super Street has invited both the Honda S2000 and Honda Fit to attend. Since this is our second year we had an idea of what to expect in the competition. Our staff and support teams have worked extremely hard on the Fit in preparation for this event.
Since the purchase of the Honda Fit, we have done a lot of research and development for new parts on this car. We want to assure everyone that our products have great potential and reliability. North America has adapted to this micro class concept and we are hoping to show automobile enthusiasts that small powered cars like the Fit have great potential with even just modest modifications.
The Fit has become our shop car along with the S2000. With all the parts on the Fit, we still manage to use it for daily driving. Similar to the previous year, we want to enter this event with a street car that has great track potential. We have decided to stay with the stock motor and internals. We have gained power from basic bolt-on parts. With the research and development of the Fit, we went with a number of T1R parts. To compliment the stock motor, we used the T1R response header backed up with a T1R Race converter; filling the gap with a T1R Prototype 50R Titanium Exhaust. After experimenting with many intake systems, we finally had the T1R B-Max Carbon intake developed because it was able to generate the most consistent mid-range power and throttle response. Along with many other supporting parts we wondered if it would be able to compete in such a prestigious event.
Due to the small powered engine of the Fit, it is important to focus on the footwork and weight of the car. After developing the T1R B-Max suspension system we decided to use this set up with Swift springs. To compete in an event like this, coilovers were just the beginning. It was important to apply J's racing roll center adjuster to correct the roll center and increase the travel of the suspension arms. 1.5 way LSD and a race clutch were part of the trick in order to achieve the best power transfer and traction to the ground.
Weight is also our major concern, so we removed many parts, such as the air bags and rear seats. Weight reduction affected all aspects of the car's drivability: acceleration, braking, response and cornering. Braking was also very important due to the fact that the stock Fit is equipped with rear drum brakes. A later braking point will shave a couple seconds off the lap time. We upgraded the front brakes from stock to the Spoon Twin Block calipers, which gave the Fit a huge advantage due to the significant reduction in weight where these 4-Pot calipers were more than enough for the set up we had.
This year, we knew what we were up against, and our main goal was to test our Fit and to show our ability. With much work and luck we won second place in the Micro-class with a time of 2:11.211. We would like to congratulate everyone who competed in this event, and all the Fit enthusiasts who have driven us to develop more parts to make this the future for tuners.
