Newtonian physics and highschool level models of static maechanics do not rule out lateral accelerations over 1.0 G. That is the limit for an object against a surface with a friction coefficient of 1.0 on a horizontal surface and there is absolutely no reason to think friction coefficients of rubber compounds against pavement are limited to that. Street tire rubber is hard and resilient enough to last 60 to 100 thousand kilometer road use while softer street compounds for vehicles like the NRX last 30K kilometers, stick like glue and are expensive. Likewise the coefficient of friction is a function of the asphalt surface chemistry and grit meaning a 2009 Z01 corvette has been recorded at 1.01 G and 1.3G by car magazines on different tracks on different days. Racers will tell you that time of day will affect cornering 0.2G sometimes by changing the temperature of the track. What amazes me is that a box stock Z06 from the dealers door will perform as well as it does or that a modern F1 car will atain well ove 3 Gs with aerodynamics and racing compounds and a sticky track. I pushed a CanAm 7 Liter Lola from the race track to the trailer once and it was incredible how hot, soft and sticky those monster tires were and it was very difficult to push this 2500 lb car. It was instant enlightenment that cornering starts where the rubber meets the road.

Almost at the end of the mag. SCC listed the top 10 cars to have highest lateral G's, you guessed it, the Fit made it on to the list! matter of fact, it's actually the Spoon Fit that made it. Here goes the list:

7. ForcedFed Performance - Lotus Elise - 1.08 Lateral-g
8. SCC - Project Miata - 1.08 Lateral-g
9. Road/Race Engineering - Mitsubishi Lancer Evo VIII - 1.06 Lateral-g

These are cars that were tested by SCC only, I'm sure there are a lot more cars out there that can do much more G's!

Maximum theoretical speed (neglecting air drag) through a curve with a radius of 150ft:
1.39g - 55.8mph
1.38g - 55.6mph
1.17g - 51.2mph
1.15g - 50.8mph
1.09g - 49.5mph
1.08g - 49.2mph
1.06g - 48.8mph

This is before the tire loses optimal grip. Just take the speeds with a grain of salt =P I don't feel like factoring in air drag and tire slip and any other factors.

Nice to see that they're doing this again. The other time I know they did this, they used a Yaris sedan. They were able to get it to 1.05 g's.

The Fit is a blast to drive but I must say I enjoy snowboarding more, and I don't know about lateral G's but spinning in free fall for about 100 feet off a mountain with 10,500 elevation is way more intense than any car ride.
I was in Salt Lake in February and took black diamond trails for the first time, there are drop-offs and turns that you have to be ultimately prepared for to avoid death, it was wicked fun! With snowboarding you can go as fast as you can handle--it's really more about braking all the time so you don't die, but if you take a straight with just a slight carve to maintain stability you can easily go what feels like 80MPH, on elevation so drastic that if you lean too far forward it's all over.
