I assume that engine hp / torque improves with rpm but an unlocked torque converter would seem to introduce an inefficiency by only transferring 50%, 60%,... of that hp / torque. Just confused on how that combination of things appears to work so well.
It works somewhat like the concept of a CVT transmission. Engine makes more power up top so it let's it slip just enough where it musters a bit more power. Automatics in general aren't entirely efficient but its getting better.

Got 38.98MPG all highway miles (except for gas pitstops) going to vegas
How I achieved that..
staying at speed limit when it was possible or go in slow lane.
when possible, drafting 3-4 car lengths behind big trucks. This was the excuse I had to be going 55,65 without other cars getting pissed at me for going slow.
A/C was on most of the trip since we left at 1pm. Going up some of the hills was torture driving conservative.. could barely tackle it.

From Vegas to Barstow I got 37.59mpg.

I probably could have driven at the pace other cars were driving and gotten 32-34mpg. Maybe less now that I think about it, since I would be in 3rd or 4th gear just to keep up with other cars on the inclines.

I just wanted to test my car and see if it still has good fuel economy capability. Looks like its holding up to its EPA estimates since I normally drive city and get around 26-28mpg. car is 5 years old with routine maintenance.

I got a Canadian 2012 Sport Fit (5AT) and did a trip from Detroit to Toledo to New York City for an airsoft camping trip.

The average fuel efficiency for me was about 39MPG.

I also did the same as suketoborudo00. Driving speed limit and surfing drafts.

Surprisingly my best fuel economy was in Pennsylvania where the speed limit is 65 vs 70 in Ohio and Michigan. I was surprised though I got better fuel efficiency in Pennsylvania because their terrain is full of hills everywhere! Beautiful scenery through there though!

Differences though was that I didn't run the A/C too much since the weather in Mid May was really nice.

I was running a lot of electronics though:
GPS (5W)
Blasting my music with SVC on high
Charged up phone and bluetooth on (5W)
TEC fridge/cooler (60W)

I could probably go more mileage if I didn't use active coolers =D

I've had my 2010 fit sport for just over a month now and I average 32.5 according to the meter in the dash. Not sure how accurate those are, but I'm happy with it. After owning an Element for about 6 years, it's nice to not have to worry about fueling up constantly.

2009 Base Fit AT Overall Fuel Economy @ 60k

We bought our 09 Fit New in August 2009 & I have logged calculated mileage for (almost) every fill-up for a little over 60,000 miles. Overall average mileage is holding @ 39.3! We do about 40 percent of our driving in suburban conditions under 40mph , 60 percent @ 45-60 mph on country roads - virtually no interstates. Tire pressure and ambient temp. Are biggest variables, 37 psi cold tire pressure is about optimum (higher increases mileage at cost of very rough ride!), winter driving at below 32° is a challenge for gas mileage and also leads to faster drop in tire pressure. Also had front-end knocked out of line once and immediately saw big drop in mileage - watch out for this! The in-dash mileage gage is off by 10-12 percent, I use a Scangage II all the time, it gets more accurate as you go along and also displays instantaneous + thankful mileage simultaneously. This has been a very economical and reliable car! Utility of rear seating is excellent... Just purchased a 2013 Mazda 6 I-Sport to replace our other car, I expect good economy + more comfort and better performance... The Fit will be with us another 3 years, hope to be able to post more good reviews! BTW: I do all my own routine maintenance, have tried synthetic oil and it does not improve mileage! I run Quaker State 5W-20 and Fram filters but do have K&N air filter which I think improved mileage slightly. Really, it is all about your driving style: moderate speeds, slow acceleration, and overall smooth driving saves you $ at the pump every time.

Day trip (Spring !) to Telluride in the San Juan mountains in SW Colorado. Home is about 6200 ft elevation and Telluride is something over 10,000 ft. All told about 160 miles return trip.

50.5 MPG on the meter. This is about the best I think the car can do in my hands. Speeds were 50 - 65 MPH. I tried to keep the engine efficiently loaded, and at 1700 - 2200 RPM.

Actually, up, then down. Then up, then down ...

The 160 miles was a return trip:
Home -> Telluride -> Home
Net elevation change = 0

As opposed to a one-way trip.

Went from 185/55/16 to 205/50/16
Went from 31mpg mixed driving to 28.7mpg... weee....
happier to be on better tires though.

20-50 MPH city/60-80 MPH freeway with 200 miles on my Fit.

31 MPG on first tank of gas from dealer.

ETA: AC on every time I drive and its 50/50 city/freeway.

First post, hi, btw.

26.4 mpg on my first tank after getting my 07 Fit used from the dealer. 100% city + AC

Looks like I've got some work to do. Still better than the 18 mpg my 93 Accord was getting.

35.8 on a recent camping trip. 100% highway AC, 70-80 mph. Pleased to see big numbers on the highway even though I'm not getting them in the city.

My 2015 Fit EX with Continuously Variable Transmission is getting 35 MPG in mixed city and highway driving, of course I was breaking it in so no peeling out or racing....

About 90% freeway, at 60 mph gets me 40 mpg.
With the a/c on I get 38 mpg.

Does this improve MPG? Why not let the engine idle if gravity achieves the speed you want. Tell us what you know.

37 mpg (16 kpl) running snow tires in city traffic and quite a bit of snow. Have yet to get on the highway.
