Chevy Aveo vs Honda Fit... scary sight.
i was driving my kids home from school the other day... now, i like to as much as any other Fit owner, but ya gotta keep it cool with the little ones on board.
so, i got off of my usual exit, a fairly tight 'clover' style off ramp that goes almost 360 degrees around. we all know that this is where the Fit shines, but again... keeping it low key. i was doing 35, maybe 40 mph tops, as were the cars behind me, and the Chevy Aveo 5 door in front of me.
flying solo, the Fit could take this ramp at 50-55mph without any real effort.
the Fit didn't even feel like it was turning. just a gentle, flat, no worries low speed turn. the Aveo in front of my was so far over on the door handles that the driver had to over-correct, and actually drove off the road. they nearly dumped it into a ditch, and barely missed the guardrail.
obviously, the driver didn't know the limits of their car, or the road. but regardless, that was a scary sight. 2 more feet and the car would have flipped.
again, speed and conditions were not a factor. it just came down to the handling of each car in normal conditions. i hope anyone who may be here researching their next small family car reads this, and spends a little extra on the Fit.

GM vehicles in general handle like big turds on wheels. When in I was in OK this summer on business, I had to drive GM cars for 2 months and it was miserable. I kept stopping to check the tires cuz I always felt like I was on a flat.

Lots of unknowns there. I've never driven an Aveo, maybe they really are that bad. Or maybe the outside front tire was worn or low on air. Or maybe the driver wasn't paying attention and had to make a sudden correction. Or maybe the struts are shot. Etcetera.
In any event, it's freaky to watch stuff like that happen. And it makes you feel good about your own choices.
I have a Subaru and I run dedicated winter tires on it when the weather turns cold. One day my wife and I were on our way home from the airport in dreary, drizzly weather. Crossing an overpass I realized that it had iced over; looking ahead to the next overpass, I saw a Volvo wagon lose control and start to spin. In the next moment, cars all around me were sliding this way and that. Because of the car I was driving and tires it was wearing I was able to pick my way through the spinning and sliding vehicles, avoid those coming towards me, and drive out the other side of the mayhem without a scratch. Talk about feeling good about car/tire choices...

The Aveo is NOT a GM vehicle. It is a Daewoo, made in Korea, with a Chevrolet badge on it.

My neighbor has the Aveo hatch in orange. I priced out a comparable Aveo with the options my Fit has, ~$13-14k. Not worth it imo. I'm jealous of his orange but that's it. Makes me smile every time he drives by.

reminds me of the time maybe 15yrs ago when hertz gave me a ford
escort. exited the expressway, down the ramp going a decent speed
but not that fast and suddenly the car just wants to spin out of control.
i mean there was no which way to correct it. it was completely out of
control, front and rear going all different directions, and literally shaking
at the suspension. basically all i could do was use the brakes to gently
scrub off speed until the car felt like it was one car again.
was pretty scary. the unbalance of some of those pos cars is unbelievable.

good thing the dude wasn't on his cel or something. gotta give him props for driving out of it.

this is exactly what it looked like man... i've spun a few cars and seen a lot more end up sideways, and there's a difference between user error/you blew it, and something just not right with the car.

nowadays, each time hertz gives us a Yaris or cobalt on my biz trips,
i tell my partner to take it easy on those exits as if he had a carton
of eggs on the roof.
i have not died yet.

well said kenchan, i agree, i have slid my Fit unintentionally, but even then, i got control back, and at the limit its very predictable.... just solid little car... shows theres a HUGE difference between an inexpensive but well built car (the Fit) and just a cheap POS....

i put my car almost sideways in a turn tonight while out for a mad burn with a buddy,, it was hell fun and the car still felt solid as the tires were screaming .
i other friend has a pontiac wave and its terrible.
