I used to feel 5k was too long, but now that 5k equates to about 5 to 6 weeks for me, 5k is my new minimum! I actually let the first one go until around 6000 miles and that has me contemplating whether every 6000 would be a nice round number.
I used to change oil every 3000 with the belief that it would make an engine last longer. I no longer feel that way...I think it's a bit early, but it sure can't hurt.
People have ran a fresh oil ana.lysis on Honda's new-engine oil and the only difference is that it's high in Moly. If you can find Havoline 5-20, it's Moly content is actually higher than what Honda puts in their engines. I believe its like 406 PPM vs 385 PPM.
I changed mines out at 2,000 miles with Havoline 5-30 with a Purolator Premium Plus filter.
It's been usually hot here, so the 5-30 will sheer back down to 5-20 in no time.
Ok, did my oil change yesterday at 2k miles.. Oil was slightly dark. Filled with Havoline 5-30W and Purolator Premium Plus filter. Will run this for 3k before I change it again to Motorcraft 5-20W Syn-Blend.
The way I've driven my car intentionally is after 600 miles, I slowly increased the RPMs as time went by eventually doing near redline once in a while. I also went as fast as I could safely to break in the injectors. Keep in mind I don't pound on the pedal, I do it smoothly with no jolts to the engine. My thoughts on doing this is to dislodge any silicone and particles from the engine and into the oil so that it can be drained out when its time to.
Now my engine feels much smoother with the 5-30 in there and it won't be long before it sheers down to 5-20 with the heat that we have been getting here.
I think the way I've broken it in has worked quite well. Right now, I'm at 182 miles and I'm ALMOST to the half marker.
The other thread on this oil change issue was locked... I forsee this one too will have the same fate
Why would it be locked? This is a legitimate discussion of a subject many people are concerned about. The other thread must have included alot of nonsense and went nowhere.

I'm with ya on this. Today's motor oils are much more superior compared to those made just a decade ago. 5k miles is the new 3k. I've used this interval with my S2k and it still runs strong with 87k miles on the clock. I use Mobil 1 synthetic.
When in doubt turn to Honda. If Honda engineers feel good about instructing us to change the oil at 7k miles, I'm going to feel good about my time table @ 5k. My 2 cents
When my Fit gets to 3k miles, I will change the oil filter and the filter only and just top off with a moly content oil. My thinking is to make sure I reduce any metal shavings/particles produced during the break-in period.

No one is disputing the quality of the oils.. But getting rid of all the stuff that breaks apart from the engine .. imagine how much silicone is being released from the engine, and 3.8 liters is not much so much of the contaminants does not dilute. Also your oil pump has work harder to move that material around.. silicone can make the oil denser.
OK - i'm NOT mechanically inclined and plan on having the dealer do my oil change - honda filter and honda oil ok? (I assume that's what they use???) Can you request different oil / filter be used? Or is the dealer supplied stuff safe?
Anybody bring their own oil and/or filter to a dealer and say "Use this instead"? What was their reaction?
Honda motor oil is sufficient but I use Mobil 1. Honda oem oil filters are one of the best. All the NSX owners I know including myself will not trust any other oil filter but oem. Pure One from Purolator, their premium filter is pretty good stuff too. That's what I'll be using for my Fit.

I went to the dealer for my first oil change. There was an appointment for a free oil change, and it had a date listed and @5000 miles. Since I only have about 2200 miles on my Fit they told me to come back when it's at 5000 miles because it has a special synthetic oil in it that is needed for break in.

So I guess I can wait until 5000 miles?
Or should I come back at 3000 miles?

Wait till the indicator says so. I am not a squareguy, but it won't hurt to follow those indications. Honda has never known for poor quality, so their systems may be good ( remember , they have to honor a waranty) and as a plus, you'll have the change for free.....
If there was a porsche 911 turbo, I am shure that everybody here woud follow the manufacturers instructions.....
By the way I wait 5280miles to 15% oil life and then went mobil 1 and oem filter

When asking two different Honda service dealerships they both told me the same thing; do it when the car tells you. Apparentely the car is very accurate with testing it's fluid conditions and need for repairs. I keep a constant watch on my oil levels and check the oil percentage regularly. Seems to be working so far...

I will be doing my first change next week after 3 months and it should be about 4650 miles. My oil life just changed to 50% life left, so perhaps I am more gentle on the engine than the above oil life Carlos got. Although I do push it a bit now that it has a few miles on it. Oil is starting to get a bit dark but viscosity seems to have held up (not at all watery). To the people that are worried about metal shavings floating around in the system, the filter should take all of them out in a single pass. If they take microscopic particles out, metal shavings should be no problem. Anyway, just my opinion. I would have changed the oil sooner, but have some other stuff to be looked at and had to wait for a loaner car to be made available.
Just did my first oil change today! at 3750....oil life was only at 50% but dont wanna run my car (and filter) till 7,000+ miles. not that i dont believe in the meter and all but ive never known a filter to last that long. but i ran Honda Filter with Castrol Syn Blend 5-20W. car revs much much easier now! got more peep to it than when i drove it off the lot.
I finally got my oil changed. I had 4109 miles on the odometer, and 30% oil life according to the life meter. I just did it now because I had the car in so they could fix the radio (which malfunctioned). Interestingly enough, the reminder sticker they put on the car shows that I should change my oil in 3,000 miles. I thought the oil change period in the fit was 5,000.
