Checking out on the site? Be sure to verify your shipping address and fully complete checkout questions. More than 10% of weekend orders missed / or had missing information necessary to process the order. When this happens we contact you and place the order on hold until we can verify your order. When possible we do try and ship orders the within 24 hours (Monday-Friday) any missing information just slows the process down. We know you hate to wait, so we do our best to turn the orders as quickly as possible!

Post Installing Headlight Armor in the cold

2015 ushered in cold for nearly all of the USA, even here in TX we saw AM temps of 16 F (-9 C) a few days last week! So I thought I would revisit a few items for those of you doing lighting protection kit installs when it is cool / cold out.

While the material is easier to use when it is warmer out you can do a successful install when it is cold out. For best results, install them when you get them, don't wait months before installing.

In a garage is really a good idea, as well as a space heater if possible if it is snowing out. Enlist the assistance of a friend and it will go quicker. You need to keep the film warm - using a hair dryer - an industrial heat gun is not necessary though you can use one on low if careful. Have the friend keep the film warm while you are applying and squeegeeing. Especially the case when compressing fingers along the perimeter of the kits.

Wrapping the squeegee with a suede detail towel will help too. As the material is going to be stiffer in the cold, just like you, you need to use more pressure on the squeegee. Hot water in you spray bottle is a good idea too. When done with your install be sure to go over the perimeter for a few minutes with the hair dryer to make sure the edges are full sealed. Any material hanging off should be trimmed flush.

Good luck with your installs and let us know if you have any questions about the above pointers.

Snow if melting here in TX and after a stormy week we are glad to see the sun!

Friday was busy and we were able to get all outstanding orders (that were in by 3PM Friday) out on Friday! Weekend orders should be shipping out Monday.

Getting some nice photo submissions this past week too. Here is one from a C7 Corvette owner. Blue Corvette with our HID Blue Headlight Protection Kit, we love the look and of course the protection the material provides too

Have an interesting shot of your Headlight Armor equipped vehicle? Garage, sunny day, snowy day, out on the beach or anywhere in between?

Have a great weekend.

Great video on headlight restoration from /Drive Clean.

Sandblasting does a number on the factory UV coating. Refinishing is your best solution if the headlights are in really rough shape. If they are not in that bad of shape you can also apply one of our Headlight Protection kits. The adhesive is going to tend to fill in the pitting resulting in a clearer headlight.

Video of the before / during / after here:

Refinishing is your best bet long term once the headlights get further deteriorated like in the video. Once you have finished the refinishing applying one of our Headlight Protection kits is your best bet. The protective material will protect against further sand erosion and eventual clouding, act as a physical barrier to oxygen and environmental contaminates, and is an easier medium to apply a UV protectant to regularly. Keep your refinished lenses looking great for years to come with a Headlight Armor headlight Protection kit!

Every so often we will field an email or question that goes something like this. “Will applying a Headlight Armor Headlight Protection Kit crack my lenses? I have heard about lens failures in certain popular applications, such as the C6 Corvette, 350Z, S2000 and such.”

In the past early S2000, C6 Corvette, and early 350Z owners reported some hairline cracking of the headlight lens – even without any protection applied. Most likely a chemical interaction or an OEM issue. A headlight protection kit is not going to cause failure of the polycarbonate…

Road & Track posted this article yesterday featuring used cars that have at least 400 HP and are a great performance deal: 5 Ways To Get 400 HP Or Better For $20,000

Scroll down to #3 2005 Chevrolet Corvette. “What Goes Wrong: The C6 is often haunted by crankshaft harmonic dampers that work loose. Also, look for fractures in the headlights that can admit moisture, resulting in fogging.”

A headlight protection kit is not going to cause the polycarbonate / Lexan to fail. What you have seen and heard / been told has nothing at all to do with the headlight protection kit. Polycarbonate & Lexan, what most composite headlights are made from these days, have a continuous working temperature of between 248 - 475 F depending on the formulation, This means that water would boil instantly upon contact and that you would get a nasty burn if you touched them before they reached the failure point. The materials we use in our lighting protection kits have been tested to 225 F, significantly lower than what a headlight lens would fail at.

Polycarbonate lens failure is usually a manufacturing issue during the production of the polycarbonate, or a chemical contact issue. The latter could have occurred before you even picked up your car from the dealer. There is one dealer here in Dallas who had to replace a lot of headlights when it was discovered that the (outsourced) make ready / wash people were using wheel acid on the entire front of the vehicle to make bug removal easier... There is a long list of chemicals that the polycarbonate lens is susceptible to.
