I know next to nothing about cameras, but Fitcapo suggested looking into a Kodak for a point and shoot camera. They are good cameras, and have a lower price tag. I'll try to get him in here when i talk to him later. Maybe he will be able to help you a bit more than i can.
it depends on what you want out of the camera, you can get some real good prices from newegg.com if you are looking to buy offline, i have a little sony that is 7mp is pretty good for everyday small to keep in your car or pocket and has real quality pics
I'm probaly gonna go to Best Buy I guess and see what they have. They have some 7.1 meg from Sony's for $150 and then they had a opened 12.1 meg Sony for $250. I guess i'm partial to Sony :/

Go with Canon!
I picked up my Canon SX100IS and OMG is this thing amazing for a P&S. Full manual mode, and a ton of Auto modes for noobs like me. Great and easy to use interface. Feels perfect in your hand, not too heavy or light. 10x zoom kicksass. Biuld quality is top notch.
Overall its a 9.3 from me so far. Excellent first day with it.
I ended up get a 12.1 Megapixel, Sony Cyber Shot W200, for 250, 316 out the door with carry case and memory stick, from Best buy! Maybe after I was my car today I post some new pics!

I don't like point and shoots. I prefer something that is a tad more advanced. I do photography on the side and I need a camera that is going to get a great picture. If the camera is a bit bulky (compared to the point and shoots), then, so be it. Sony and Cannon both have great camera's, but I am more of a Sony fan for the digitals. Now, if we were talking 35mm, then i would get a Cannon hands down.

I shoot with a nikon D40x (most expensive camera i could afford) so i agree with you there.
