Anything above 6mp is a novelty unless you're a paid professional doing prints larger than 8.5x11. If you keep all your prints smaller than 8.5x11 then larger MP will only benefit you if you're a fan of cropping, in fact less MP improves high ISO noise. In the world of dSLRs better glass is a better investment than a body in most cases. Unless you're going from a D40 to a D3. The lens controls the sharpness of the photo, the colors, the bokeh, fast autofocusing to capture moving shots before they're out of frame. You can have a camera with the fastest shutter response ever but if you put a lens in front of it with a slow, clunky AF than you'll probably miss the shot.

To the OP, if you're just getting introduced to the dSLR side of photograph then I'd suggest finding a new or used D40 or Rebel XT. You'll find no real benefit of upgrading from these cameras to the 40x/60 or XTi/XSi when you're just starting out. And when you do finally discover the differences, they'll be so minimal that you'll want something more powerful anyways.

To go along with the thread, I shoot with a Nikon D50 with a Sigma 18-50mm f/2.8 and an SB-400 with diffuser. You can see some of my pics here: Flickr: arisenfury's Photostream

Wow a lot of D50 owners here!

I've got a D50 with a Nikon 18mm-55mm lens, SB800 flash, Stroboframe, tripod, and remote. I just sold my film SLR rig which was a Nikon N80 and a 24mm-200mm lens.

And I would recommend reading up on Ken Rockwell's site about anything and everything camera related. this guy is the bomb and has owned, good grief, $100,000 worth of camera gear. He has done it all.

And to comment on what arisenfury stated:

He is absolutely right. Megapixels are worthless and you shouldn't base your purchase on that. Anything you can get today is going to be at the very least 6mp if not more. And as stated anything over 6mp is a waste and a tool to try to sell you more expensive gear. 6mp is all you will ever need unless you make your living making 3' posters on photo-quality paper.

Read what Ken rockwell says on his site and see what really matters. Funny enough, Ken says the best camera on the market now for 99% of the population is the Nikon D40. It will do anything you will ever need to do and is the lowest priced DSLR on the planet.

That sounds great. Yes the D40 is bomb. Once i get my new parts on my car and painted im going to start saving up for my D40. Im going to keep my Canon SX100IS so i can take it with me when i want just a light, quik little P&S. And for a P&S the SX100IS is a pretty good cam. I just think that i have out grown it already.

Heres what i found-
Nikon D40 SLR Digital Camera Kit with 18-55mm Lens - FotoConnection.com

So cheap for a DSLR, do you guys think that is legit?

The best deal I've found so far is this one from Beach Camera.

$569.00, no tax, free shipping, includes D40 body, 2 lenses, 2 DVDs and a 2GB SD card for free.

Beach Camera is also a 5-star rated company and was the 2005, 2006 and 2007 BizRate.com award for excellence winner. About as legit as they come.

http://www.beachcamera.com/shop/product.aspx?omid=108&ref=cnet&utm_source=CNET&utm _medium=cpc&utm_campaign=NKD40KT2&sku=NKD40KT2

If you get it from best Buy, Costco, Circuit City, etc, in-store you will have to pay tax, and also shipping if shipped.

Also remember that if you ever want to get accessories like bags, tripods or bigger SD cards, get them somewhere else. They always tend to jack up the price on the accessories when you get the camera for a low price to try to make up some profit. You will almost always find say an SD card cheaper somewhere else. I think I saw a 4GB SD card going for like $200 on one of those sites. That's outrageous. You can get them for less than $20 at a bunch of places. I got a name-brand real-deal 4GB SD card off eBay for $7 shipped.

If you want the most legit camera website out there I would go to Digital Cameras, Camcorders, Photography Equipment - CALUMET

They have everything and keep an eye out for sales. Recently I picked up two 2gb ultra sd cards for $30.

Funny you should mention Calumet. I purchased my N80 and my D50 from them. I love them and would highly recommend them. They just don't have the lowest price on the D40 right now, and Beach is every bit as legit. In fact, Calumet wants $700 for the exact same $570 package from Beach.

Well yeah they can be pricey at times you have to wait for their sales. Also if your a student that is involved with some sort of visual arts or anything that could relate to photography you can get stuff cheaper through calumet or I think also maconcampus.

I bought a $800 view camera lens when I was going to school for photography for only $600 because of student discounts.

To get the discounts I believe you have to submit a copy of your student id class schedule and acceptance letter tho. At least for maconcampus don't remember if you had to for calumet.
