How about the Tamron 90mm 2.8 macro? Optical quality is apparently excellent, it'll autofocus w/ your D40, and after the rebate it's $399, which is pretty reasonable as these things go.
Yawn . . . . taking a break from editing photos from shooting my cousin's wedding yesterday. 8 hours and 700+ photos later my back and shoulders were killing me; felt like I got beat down in a losing football match. Anyone says that wedding photography isn't work should get smacked. If I did this every weekend I could lose the 50+ pounds I put on in my current job in 6 mos. Anyway, it's my first one, and while it was a great experience, I'd seriously consider ever doing another one b/c it's a lot of responsibility.
Here's a few initial edits from the day if you're curious:

I'll be nervous to shoot my first wedding.
But I'm sure it will be my sister's, and my brother will be there as well (has been doing photography a lot longer than me) so I won't be pressured as much.

All things told, it wasn't as nearly nerve-racking once I got going with it as I expected -- I just got into shooting mode and kind of ignored everything else. I like the freedom you get at events when you photograph them. I just go where I want and take the pics and roll with the flow of things, which is fun.
You'll probably have a good time too. The experience gained is very useful and can apply to a number of situations.
@ Arisenfury: Yeah, I can say I did it twice -- first time and the last time. :P Still, I already have two offers for weddings from workmates, but probably won't take them (unless I need the money). In my cousin's case, it was more like my wedding gift to her, although my aunt still wants to pay something for the time even though I've refused more than a few times to take anything.
