Not to fan the flames of AT vs. MT tranny (as I am am AT person myself) but they probably did it to appeal to more people. If the car does well, then they will probably come out with a proper MT down the road, but first thing is first, they have to appeal to the larger audience to get to that level first, and to do that, they went with AT.
While I agree MT is the more sporty and arguably fun to drive, sometimes its just not wanted or practical (traffic). I for one haven't owned an MT car in over 10 years. I no longer have time for the track, and my weekend twisty road times have also been reduced, hence my need for an MT was overshadowed by comfort and convenience. (Yeah Im an old fart in training :p :D )
Maybe Nissan was thinking they could steal some of the Ferrari karma. Remember most of the 360's and 430's sold had F1/Paddle Shifters.

No body is going to be complaining after they drive the car with the paddles, its among the fastest shifting cars around. The tranny on that car is just amazing. Plus they say its a daily driving super car, so when your sitting in traffic on your way to work, you put the car in D, pop and CD into your bose system, set the setting to comfort and pretend you rolling in your G35 sedan, just alot faster!

Yeah except you are forgetting one thing. This car, while a totally new design, is a freakin' legend. Especially in Japan. Look at how many tuners get their hands on the old R32 R33 and R34 models... tuning is so much of what made this car famous. I bet alot of people will be complaining...like the true driving, tracking auto enthusiasts that made this car what it is, and in turn allowed it to come to America, by creating so much hype. I believe alot of rich people with your mentality will buy this car, and sit in it, and drive it in traffic, and listen to their Bose systems...but the history and reason it was built was to be a damn sports car, and things like that are the least important in a sports car.
I mean the engine is hand built by one guy, they did everything to prove Nissan can still make amazing sports cars, but because of people like you who are more worried about vanity that actually driving the car and using it for why its made, they decided to go with a DSG tranny for appeal. Sucks because they have said for the tuners out there, this will be one of the big problems to surpass, because these DSG style trannies may not react well to tuners putting large amounts of power through them...
This reminds me alot of what I read about corvettes once. Even though it is a iconic american legend and amazing sports car, I read that almost 80% of buyers are women who want automatics...geez what is this world coming to!

Its all about capitalism. Money talks, tuners walk. If you run a company, you run it to make money. Building something for a small niche market like tuners is a very tough thing to do in this day and age regardless of the cars history. Big companies have stockholders looking over your shoulder looking for a return on their investment. Is an AT the best when compared to the fun of a manual, depends who you ask. But its where the demand and money is, so i'd have done the same thing if I worked for Nissan. Appeal to the mass first, worry about the niche later. Because if you design your business model to a small marketshare out of the box and lose money, there might not be a later. Nissan invested tons of money in this project, the car is priced at $70K+, you can BET they want the best return and image possible. If you dont like the car with an AT, you can do three things, become the CEO of Nissan and change their ways, buy the car and swap out the tranny, or buy another car. They want their halo car to be exclusive and they want that image. They dont want it chopped up by tuners. If you want to tune a car, buy a 350Z as that is not their exclusive halo car. Till then just hang tight and hope Nissan does make money off this, because if they do and the demand is there; an MT will be on the way.

I agree with what youre saying, I guess, its just that this is a Japanese car manufacturer and the lineage of the Skyline has always been a tuners car, and obviously, that has never kept it from being one of the most sought after cars anywhere... So knowing that this thing is gonna sell like hotcakes, and the fact that tuners are dying to get ahold of it everywhere...you would think that would affect their decision...its not like that dont have proof that people would buy it if it were manual.

Sweet Impala tails and Vette rear bumper.
Deff wouldnt win a beauty contest. Butt ass ugly.
I can see the resemblence to the 'Vette bumper now that you mention it, but it's more like Impala has GT-R/Skyline tails. GT-R's, and Skylines in general, have had the dual round tails for as long as they've been produced -- it's one of their hallmarks.
In that color, the car looks brutal. I'd take one in a heartbeat.

Even if the new GT-R is ugly. I'd still take one based off its performance/pedigree over its looks. But i will agree with you this is probably the ugliest GT-R to date
The only thing it has going for it is the performance and price, IMO. Interior isnt that great, (Nissan thing) its dog heavy, bulky, and pretty ugly.
Looking at more pics of it.... Wow. Its freakin ugly. Ive seen some pics of the GTR in Japan and it looks more pleasing. IDK why, its the same thing right? Im not really keeping track cause I dont really care.
Keep in mind I think the 2 door Altima is ugly. I never liked 350's that much also. Theyre nice but they ruined the sex appeal with that freakin door handle. Looks like they tried to get rid of it this time and failed horribly. Why not have no door handles? Maybe a body line with a push button underneath?
The rear end of this car is so ugly.
My all time Fav Skyline is the R32. It aint changin!
You've probably never seen an R30 then have you? Ugly, but still very cool in an 80's J-car kinda way. In any case, People said the same thing with every generation of recent GT-R, yet they're still legendary and considered some of the most recognized, agressive looking, and coveted cars that have ever been made. Plus, wait until the tuning starts and we see some real body kits start to come out for these cars. The GT500 test car is a good indication of where that's probably gonna go, and it's one of the most agressive looking GT500 cars that's come out in a while. I will say though, that the GT-R does look waaay better in just about any color other than the silver that's been the main color promoted all along.
Some various pics I found from JDM blogs over the last few days:
R30 is SICK! Im a HUGE fan of older boxy cars. Guessing you havent seen my Mx-6? ;)
My wheels are off a R33 GTS. Cars are very similar to the 1st gen Mx-6.
i love this car. Although i do not like the automatic transmision in it,(kinds of looses the real sport car theme imo), do not like it in all colors either and the back of it takes a while to like it.
I just dont know if they were trying to make it a sport luxurious car or a luxurious sports car

How can you possibly think thats ugly!?! Yeah the car may not appeal to all people the way it does to some, but you cant tell me you think its THAT ugly! Its just a BOLD new design, thats like nothing else. No other car has similar exterior features. The thing is a work of art! For the price, there's nothing like it. I wish i was rich lol.
Ive been researching the new EvoX, and it seems like that car is going to be a sweet car for the money. Instead of saving up for years for a GTR id settle for a 09 Evo lol.
You'd probably like the old-school Toyota Soarer's too then. Nifty cars, and can be very quick.
Hells yea. I also love the 80's Cressida. :o

IDK... Its just ugly to me. I like the front but thats it. Sides are ok. The rear is horrible!
Same concept when I think about the Z4. I HATE the Z4. Its like they worked to hard designing the front and the sides and forgot about the rear end. So they copied the Vette, stole some Impala tails and done
New Skyline.
Doesnt matter what I think. Everyone loves them. Im sure seeing one in person will make me like them a little more.

Id say that car wont sell for crap. Reason, they dropped the 4G63. Why on earth would they do that!? That motor is a legend and thats why the Evo's sold.
Sure theyll sell a good amount but nothing to what they thought theyd sell.
The car looks nice though.
Yeah man, i wonder why they decided to change motors..Who knows the new one might be even better. All the reviews ive read have been awesome. Its known as a poor man IS-F!

Itll probably be awesome in stock form. It wont take to mods like the 4G did. No motor does.
Im sensing a lot of blown EvoX motors.
Paying money for a quality car. BMW, Mercedes, SAAB are all rated poorly. They have a high incidence of breaking down. The days of the Europeans ruling the luxury/performance area are gone. The Japanese make a far superior car in terms of reliability. The Skyline GTR is the epitome of performance. Nothing can beat it. For the price it is a bargan compared to a Porche.
Im with ya about the new Nismo Z..Id take a base 350Z before that....Thing.
What the hell is that lip, why is it all curvey. And i never noticed that 2 spoiler stacked thing on the back, i lol at that thing.
