fuel filter

1994 accord ex- What is the best procedure to remove the fuel filter. I
recently purchased this vehicle. The filter has never been changed.
Mileage is 139,000 miles. It seems that the lower fitting to the filter
is very difficult to remove.Any suggestions would be helpful.

ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS... disconnect the negative battery terminal FIRST!
On the Civic it's very easy to touch the positive battery terminal
with the wrench while taking the connections loose... this would result
in a spark and instant FIRE! So be careful!

On my 94 Civic, you get the manual out and read the instructions! ; )
Other than that, there's a small 10mm bolt that you remove to relieve
the fuel pressure, be sure to remove the gas cap on the gas tank to
relieve pressure first though. It's pretty easy from there.... just
unscrew the fittings and replace the little copper washers.

www.autozone.com has a free repair guide online for the 1994 Accord that has
this procedure.

That's a mighty long time to go without changing the fuel filter. Dump a
bottle of Chevron Techron in before your next oil change, as some kind of
precaution to help keep the system clean.

Changing that filter is a real B!tch, and yes the capital B is on purpose!
What I thought would be a 30 minute job turned in to four hours of cursing.
The only advice I have is to make sure and use line wrenches to remove the
fittings. Get cheap wrenches so you don't feel so bad when you have to chop
one in two to make a stubby line wrench to complete the job.

We absolutely do not relieve pressure by removing the gas cap. In fact,
on an empty tank you may have a vacuum. To top it off, fuel vapor is
another static electricity hazard.

Relieve pressure with your mouth. Remove the fuel pressure regulator
vacuum hose that runs to throttle body and suck on it for a second or
so. Then put a rag under and on top of the filter and relieve the pressure.

Pardon me for jumping quickly to conclusion. In case there is
pressure in the gas tank it would be prudent to release the
pressure in the tank.
