However, looking at other cars in this class the Canadian ratings tend to be slightly more optimistic than the American ones by around 3 - 4mpg on the highway rating (pretty much the same on the city). So you're back to the same figures already announced in the US.
There are 5 reasons why the American Fit gets less MPG than the European / Canada version.
1. Weight.
2. Bigger motor.
3. Imperial gallon is larger than a U.S. gallon.
4. U.S. fuel blends produce less emissions, but also less MPG.
5. U.S. emissions requirements.
It is not a big Honda conspiracy to screw the U.S.
Not a big conspiracy, but you would think they could equel the Corolla - which has a much larger and more powerful engine, but gets 3 more mpg on the highway.
The 2008 model will be all new for Japan. The US version should be a carry over of the 2007. I think they are doing this to keep down retooling cost for the NA version.

check out www.vtec.net I think there are some pics of the 2008 model on that site. The US will have our 2007 model as a carry over for 2008 and the 2009 model will be all new and possible it will be only sold in our market as a hybrid version.
The 1.5L version of the fit engine is the same world wide. The HP and TQ rating are the same. Honda made changes to the transmission gearing. Note that the USDM Fit goes 0-60 in 8.6s or something while the EDM and JDM Fits do this in 11.xx seconds. Look at the gear ratio specs for each manual car. Personally I would prefer the slower, more efficient gearing, even a 6th gear for the ultimate in highway cruising. Honda's marketing division, and past experience has shown that they sell more cars in North America based on stupid stats that only 0.1% of the population even utilize, like 0-60 times, but I have a feelingthat is going to change in the next few years.
To summarize, it is the gearing that is different, not the engine, although we only have the 1.5l VTEC available in the US, not the 1.3 or the iDSI, which is unfortunate.
My other vehicle is a Ford Diesel truck and I've watched the actual calculated fuel mileage go down on each new one I've bought over the years.
The reason...........EPA regs have brought the mileage down from 20+ to the mid to high teens.
If you can find someone to take a look at the fuel & timing maps in the Fit's computer and compare them with the maps from other countries I think you will find that they are quite different.
The EPA costs us a lot of money when it comes to buying fuel for our cars. The next time you fill up and get mad at the cost send the EPA a letter and ask them to cut back from dozens & dozens of formulations to 5 or 6 to help us out at the pump.

The 1996 Honda Civic HX CVT got 34 city/38 highway.
The 1996 5 speed got 35 city/43 highway, AND THAT WAS 10 YEARS AGO!
Not to mention that the Honda Fit gets in US MPG about 35 city/ 50 highway over seas. If you calculate the weight differential between the us model and over seas the difference is only 300 pounds. Which would lessen the mpg to about 3 less. SO THE US MODEL SHOULD BE GETTING ABOUT 32 CITY/ 47 HIGHWAY, BUT WITH THE NEW ADVANCEMENT IN THE HONDA ENGINE THE MPG WOULD BE EVEN HIGHER!!!!! LIKE 33 -35 CITY / 47 - 50 HIGHWAY!!!!! SO it's no wonder people are pissed off that the US MODEL IS ONLY GETTING 33/38!!!! ARE YOU WORRIED THAT THE HIGH MPG WILL TAKE AWAY SALES FROM ITS MONEY MAKING HIGHBRIDS AND CIVICS??? SURE HONDA WILL ATTRACT SOME YOUNG BUYERS TO BE LOYAL TO HONDA, BUT THEY MADE THE MISTAKE OF DOWN GRADING THE AMERICAN MODEL. You are comparing new apples to apples that are 11 years old, and only on one criterion (EPA mileage ratings). If you want to make a valid comparison, compare the US Fit to other cars now available in the US.
I agree, the Fit sucks on mpg......my wife is getting mid 20's. This car is a pig......we should have gotten a Yaris instead.
i agree the car is a hog but i wouldnt buy a yaris. (too small inside and cheaper interior then fit) scion or versa? or civic. heck if your fit is in good shape - check trading it in.
my 1995 honda civic that was on its last breath got the same mpgs i am getting with the fit. i am not happy.
This month so far I have averaged 38.2 mpg overall with one tank at 44+ MPG.
Mine is a Fit Sport m/t.
Mileage is affected a lot by:
how you drive
tire inflation
type of gas (ethanol blend or regular)
terrain
city/highway mix
I wouldn't dump the Fit for a Yaris. There are lots of Yaris owners complaining about poor gas mileage too. Your situation might not yield good results on a Yaris either.
And there is the possibility that some Fits did not have the engine CPU idle-training done properly or at all.
the fit i have get 35 city/41highway i do a lot of highway 70 a day and 30 city. if i stay at 70 MPH it great. if i do 75 to 85 it like 34 highway it never the same too. my SUV was $125.00 a week in gas now it 38 a week very happy with my fit and happy to be on this site too.

MY 2 FITS ARE AUTO TRAN too and no sports for me too thay had none left too
