07 Fit - transmission suddently doesn't engage, just makes thumping noise

Our 07 Fit Sport 5sp automatic suddenly lost power to the wheels while driving along - whether in drive or reverse, there is just a 'thump thump thump' noise from underneath, and then a sort of whine when you put it back into park, which dies down after a second. Even in park the car will roll. It seems like somehow the connection between the transmission and wheels has been cut.

I'm going to start calling garages in the morning, but wondered if anyone could hazard a guess at what might be wrong?

Thanks!

Broken CV joint,, if either side breaks car does not move,, typically make a thumping banging noise on failure,,,

Its not a hard DIY you just need to get it on ramps, and you can buy the pre-assembled axles on line like rock auto and others..
Or remove the axles and take them to a axle specialty shop they can replace the CV joints for ya..

Good luck.

More likely axle failure due to rust!
